What is Intellectual Property?

Ideas, designs, creativity - these are key to a prosperous and thriving society. They help us work better, to make finer products and to compete more effectively in world trade. A brisk and orderly exchange of ideas is as important to our economy as the flow of money or goods and services.

To promote this exchange, while protecting owners' rights, the Government of Canada considers certain kinds of creative endeavours "intellectual property." You can receive legal recognition for these endeavours in much the same way as you receive title to a piece of land. In addition, the records and the documents that protect intellectual property owners' rights contain valuable information. The Bank of Speakers initiative is a collaboration between the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada. Over 200 IP professionals join forces to deliver educational intellectual property presentations.

Learning Outcomes

To date, the initiative is aimed at raising awareness of IP by introducing basic concepts such as:

  • Importance and strategic use of IP
  • An introduction to trade secrets, patents, trade-marks, copyrights and industrial designs
  • Useful resources and tips
  • Links to IP publications and on-line tools; and contact information.

The presentation introduces types of IP; namely, trade secrets, patents, trade-marks, copyrights and industrial designs, and includes a list of important resources to help you get the most from your IP assets!

After learning the basics, workshop participants engage in a case study discussion lead by a local patent agent.
