Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for both the IFP and SFP?

No, you may only apply for one program. If you have secured an industrial partner you should apply for the industrial fellowship.

I currently hold an NSERC/CIHR/SSHRC postdoctoral scholarship. Am I eligible?

You are eligible to apply for the program. However, you may not hold an Elevate award at the same time as any other federal or provincial grant or scholarship.

Is Mitacs Elevate open to fellows in any academic discipline?

Yes.

How many of each type of fellowship will be awarded?

The Elevate Review Committee will decide the number of fellowship awards in each category.

Do I need to be a recent PhD to apply?

No, however, all other aspects being equal, preference will be given to those applicants who obtained their PhD within the last 5 years.  Justifications for pursuing a postdoctoral fellowship for those applicants who received their PhD’s more than five years ago can be made on the application in section 11.

I won’t have defended my PhD by the application deadline. Can I still apply?

Yes. You need to have completed your PhD by the start date of your fellowship.

My project requires ethics/animal care/biohazard review. Do I have to submit the approval from the university review committee with my application?

No, the report is not required by the application deadline, but must be received by MITACS before the start of your fellowship.  These forms can be uploaded as a PDF document at the time of application or can be uploaded after the application was submitted.  Upon submission of an application a confirmation email will be sent that includes information on how to upload further documents to your application.

Does the fellow need to be identified at the time of application?

Yes.  If you are interested in a project with an industrial partner but have not yet identified a PDF you may want to consider applying for the MITACS Accelerate program instead.

I want to hold my fellowship at the same university where I received my PhD. Is this allowed?

Preference will be given to applicants who are moving to a different university to pursue their postdoctoral work.  If you wish to apply without changing universities then there is room on the application template (section 11) to justify this choice.

Can the partner be a not-for-profit?

Yes. Any non-government (federal, provincial or municipal) organization is eligible; however, preference will be given to applications with for-profit companies.

When must the partner contribution be received at Mitacs?

The partner funds must be received prior to any fellowship funds being sent by Mitacs. Please note that all industry funds should be sent directly to Mitacs.

Is an existing collaboration with a partner eligible?

Yes. An IFP fellowship may build on an existing partnership or form the beginning of a new partnership. However, the $30,000 in partner funds must be received at MITACS prior to to the start date of the fellowship. No funds will be released until this contribution has been received.

If I am a BC PDF, does the partner organization have to be in BC also, or can other Canadian and international organizations count?

The partner organization must have an office in BC at which the fellow will conduct some of the research.

Are funds that are matched by other organizations eligible for Elevate?

No. Elevate funds cannot be matched by any other federal or provincial agency.

My academic supervisor owns a spin-off company. Is it an eligible partner?

In most cases, this constitutes a Conflict of Interest and would not be allowed. Your supervisor must fill out the Conflict of Interest declaration form, which must be attached to your application, and the Elevate Review Committee will make the final decision concerning eligibility. However, we strongly recommend that you seek a different academic supervisor.

The company I want to work with is very small. Is that ok?

Small companies are ok as long as they have an independent site where you can work with company personnel at least 25% of the time during your fellowship.

There’s no need for me to go to the company’s facilities as I can do all the research at the university. Is this allowed?

No.  Under the industrial fellowship program you must spend a minimum of 25% of your time throughout the year working at the company’s facilities based in your province.

My area of study is not listed as a “socio-economic sector of strategic importance” in the province in which I am applying. Can I still apply?

Yes. Other “new and emerging sectors” may be eligible, but you must provide a paragraph of justification in your application.

When is the $20,000 contribution sent to Mitacs if I am applying for a strategic fellowship?

The contribution from the academic supervisor/university must be received at Mitacs prior to the start of the fellowship.  No funds will be released until this contribution has been received.

Do I need to contact potential partners before I apply for a strategic fellowship?

All efforts to secure an industrial partner should be made prior to applying to the MITACS Elevate program.  The Strategic fellowship is open to applicants who were not successful in securing an industrial partner at the time of application and who intend to continue efforts in initiating an industrial-academic collaboration throughout the year

The Great Idea Pitch

It was the first-time, but not the last, that pushing our Mitacs Elevate fellows outside their comfort zones proved to be nerve-wracking, yet ultimately beneficial.  With the TV program Dragon...

The Mitacs Elevate program is unique because it encourages postdoctoral fellows to refine their research skills while also gaining experience connecting with professionals outside of academia. I have been able to further develop my communication and project management abilities through the various workshops offered through Elevate and have had a chance to use these skills to plan conferences and symposiums. As a result of participating in Elevate, I am more prepared for a wider variety of professional positions.
