Project Description:

The project is to research infrared imaging technology and help to implement, in collaboration with our Engineering staff, a thermal imaging camera system which can be used to characterize various automated welding processes.

Background and required skills

Research Objectives/Sub-Objectives:

  • Determine expected correlations between thermal data and welding process control parameters
  • Develop specification for thermal imaging sensor
  • Determine best thermal imaging sensor / camera / technology for the task
  • Determine if absolute temperature calibration is required, or if a relative calibration would be adequate for our needs
  • Specify, design and build necessary lab test systems (calibrated heat sources, etc.)
  • Identify and resolve field integration and environmental control issues
  • Develop demonstration software for field-testing (may be out of scope)

Methodology:

TBD at this time, but may include:

  • Research and select appropriate infrared sensing techniques used in commercially available sensors
  • Select appropriate imaging camera / sensor technology
  • Develop a calibration procedure for the  infrared sensor technique using a commercial components and PC software
  • Design a camera / sensor hardware solution

Expertise and Skills Needed:

  • Thermal imaging, thermodynamics
  • Metallurgy and / or welding (nice to have but not a core required  skill)
  • Practical, hands-on experimentation
  • Electro-Mechanical systems design
