Project Description:

Post-combustion micro carbon capture and utilization (µCCU) is an innovative approach to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of conventional boilers. AltaGas (and Pacific Northern Gas, its subsidiary in BC) is supporting the research to evaluate the performance and feasibility of conventional NG fired boilers retrofit with a µCCU unit. The successful intern will work with the technology provider and NG utility to evaluate techno-economic performance and life cycle analysis of µCCU system.

Background and required skills

Research Objectives/Sub-Objectives:

  • Techno-economic analysis of µCCU system
  • Evaluate the overall impact of µCCU to reduce GHG emissions
  • Evaluate the feasibility of µCCU system retrofit in commercial/institutional buildings

Methodology:

  • Analyse the realtime data of µCCU system
  • Develop and validate a numerical model for µCCU system in TRNSYS
  • Techno-economic analysis of µCCU system retrofit using the numerical model
  • Develop a model for global GHG emissions of the µCCU system
  • Economic analysis

Expertise and Skills Needed:

  • Thermodynamic analysis
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Proficiency in building performace simulation using TRNSYS and other relevant software
  • Strong programing skills with Fortran and Matlab
