Appropriate sensor signal analysis and abstraction in physical activity game design

The industrial partner, Digido, is interested in developing and marketing exercise games targeted at children that leverage the increased prevalence of  smartphones and their sensing and computational capacity, including: their ability to detect activity levels; their increasing use as a gaming platform; and their integration with social media and online communities. However, current activity sensing and classification techniques are too limiting for use in smartphone-based exergames for children.

PLC Design for Wastewater Treatment

This project is aimed at designing a comprehensive PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) system for the automatic operation and control of three wastewater treatment plants under construction in northern Saskatchewan. We are going to use mathematical modeling to complete this task. In order to maximize the safety level of the operating plant, we will carefully investigate and incorporate each possible error case into the PLC system.

When NexLev took on the challenge of automating the operation of wastewater treatment plants for communities in Northern Saskatchewan, Iskra explains, “we needed a mathematician, but not just any mathematician. We needed someone with the latest, cutting-edge knowledge in fields such as fuzzy logic, modeling, probability theory and Monte Carlo simulation. The problem was this type of person is extremely difficult to find and also very costly.”
