Program eligibility

Graduate Interns

To be eligible, graduates must be:

  • A recent graduate of a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) program from a university (Bachelor, Masters, Doctorate) or hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited degree granting college;
  • Recent graduates must have finished their last degree no more than 5 years ago;
  • Not have previously participated in the Mitacs Enterprise internship program;
  • Be eligible to work in the province of Ontario for the duration of the internship;
  • Not currently be employed by the company offering the internship.
  • Be an Ontario resident
  • Participate in a One-Day Orientation Session before employment starts at own cost
  • Participate in a Two-Day skills Bootcamp during internship a One-Day Orientation Session before employment starts at own cost

Part-time Student Interns

To be eligible, part-time students must be:

  • A current Masters or Doctoral student in a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) program from a university;
  • Not have previously participated in the Mitacs Enterprise internship program;
  • Be eligible to work in the province of Ontario for the duration of the internship;
  • Not currently be employed by the company offering the internship;
  • Be an Ontario resident;
  • Participate in a One-Day Orientation Session before employment starts at own cost
  • Participate in a Two-Day skills Bootcamp during internship

SMEs

To be eligible, the SME must be:

  • Based in Southern Ontario.
    • For the purposes of the program Southern Ontario is defined as the following 2006 Statistic Canada Census regions: 1 Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry; 2 Prescott and Russell; 6 Ottawa; 7 Leeds and Grenville; 9 Lanark; 10 Frontenac; 11 Lennox and Addington; 12 Hastings; 13 Prince Edward; 14 Northumberland; 15 Peterborough; 16 Kawartha Lakes; 18 Durham; 19 York; 20 Toronto; 21 Peel; 22 Dufferin; 23 Wellington; 24 Halton; 25 Hamilton; 26 Niagara; 28 Haldimand-Norfolk; 29 Brant; 30 Waterloo; 31 Perth; 32 Oxford; 34 Elgin; 36 Chatham-Kent; 37 Essex; 38 Lambton; 39 Middlesex; 40 Huron; 41 Bruce; 42 Grey; 43 Simcoe; 46 Haliburton; and 47 Renfrew
  • A start-up or an SME is defined as a company with up to 1,000 employees. Start-up companies must have the necessary management and resources to provide a meaningful experience for the Intern.
    • Holding companies that do not have their own facilities are not eligible.
  • Prepared to work with and host the Intern at their facilities the equivalent of full-time;
  • Based in a facility outside of an Ontario university research laboratory;
  • The company must be able to demonstrate how they will:
    • benefit from the technical knowledge of the Intern;
    • equip the Intern with applied business skills and experience; and
    • assign a management-level mentor to the Intern and provide regular meetings with that mentor to complete an assigned project.
  • Committed to provide a minimum financial support towards the Enterprise program of $15,000 (or $10,000 for graduates of college or undergraduate programs).
  • Primary business focus must be related to science, technology, and engineering or math, bio-economy and clean technologies, advanced health technologies, pharmaceutical research and manufacturing, and digital media and information and communications technologies. 

Frequently Asked enterprise Questions

What are the intern eligibility guidelines for Mitacs Enterprise?

Broadly, prospective interns must be graduates of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines and he/she must have graduated no more than five (5) years from his/her STEM program. Interns may also be current graduate students (Masters and Doctoral levels).   Interns cannot be current employees of the company or hold current employment with another company. Interns may have previous FT employment, but cannot be currently employed.

I am a potential intern. How many Enterprise internships can I complete?

Interns can only complete one internship through the Enterprise program.

I am a potential intern. Do I need a company partner to apply?

 

No.  You are welcome to apply, regardless of whether or not you have a company partner.  Once you have been accepted into the program, you will be requested to view the current internship opportunities and select your top three choices.  If there aren’t any opportunities which suit you, we will keep your application on file until a suitable match can be made.

My company is interested in taking part in Enterprise. Do we need to have identified an intern before applying?

 

No.  Your company is welcome to apply, regardless of whether or not you have an intern identified.  Once you have been pre-qualified, we will post your proposed intern job title and description on our website.  Potential interns will be requested to visit the site and apply to their top three choices.  You will receive notification of which interns have applied and will be asked to select candidates for interviews.
