MITACS NCE Postdoc Research Projects
MITACS NCE Postdoc Research Projects – Closed
The MITACS Network of Centres of Excellence will offer funding for up to 35 projects led by postdoctoral researchers.  Projects should be focused in the mathematical sciences and directed towards one of the following MITACS themes:
  • Biomedical and Health
  • Environment and Natural Resources
  • Information Processing
  • Risk and Finance
  • Communication, Networks and Security

This is an opportunity for recent PhD holders to gain experience in taking leadership of research projects and to develop collaborations with non-academic organizations.

MITACS is soliciting proposals for two types of projects:

  1. Industrial Projects: MITACS expects to fund up to 25 projects in this category.
    • The project has demonstrated support of a non-academic partner who is a receptor for the research.
    •  The project is led by a postdoctoral researcher in conjunction with a faculty member of a Canadian university who is eligible to hold tri-council funding.
    • The project has an annual budget of $70,000 annually. The budget must include a minimum annual stipend of $60,000 for the postdoctoral researcher, with the remaining amount going towards research costs.
    • The partner organization is expected to provide a cash contribution of $20,000 per year, as well as an in-kind contribution; there is no specified minimum but the nature of the in-kind support will be used as part of the adjudication process.
    • The duration of the project is up to 24 months, and the project must conclude by December 31, 2012.

  2. Strategic Projects: MITACS expects to fund up to 10 projects in this category.
    • The project does not necessarily have existing connections with any non-academic organizations. However, the applicant commits to working with MITACS to help establish such connections.
    • The project is led by a postdoctoral researcher in conjunction with a faculty member of a Canadian university who is eligible to hold tri-council funding.
    • The project has an annual budget of $55,000.  The budget must include a minimum annual stipend of $50,000 for the postdoctoral researcher, with the remaining amount going towards research costs.
    • $15,000 per year is contributed by the faculty member from non-Federal government funding sources.
    • The duration of the project is up to 24 months, and the project must conclude by December 31, 2012.
