Funding for summer schools, tutorials, workshops, short courses or other similar events that provide graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with technical training that augment their normal program of study.

The MITACS Network of Centres of Excellence
hereby solicits proposals for
graduate training events in the mathematical sciences

MITACS has funding and organizational support available for graduate training events in the mathematical sciences including summer schools, tutorials, workshops, short courses or other similar events that provide graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with technical training that augments their normal program of study.

Joint funding applications with other organizations are welcome, although the proposal must indicate clearly all confirmed or potential sponsors and their level of financial support. Proposals should be submitted to MITACS at the same time as to other organizations.

Please consult the Guide for Applicants and Organizers of MITACS Scientific Events for allowable costs and funding limits, and the section below for available organizational support.

DEADLINES

MITACS accepts networking proposals three times annually, on January 4, April 30, and September 10. Proposers are *strongly* encouraged to discuss their ideas with the MITACS Director of Programs ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) as early as possible, preferably at least three weeks prior to submitting a proposal. MITACS may also consider proposals submitted outside these deadlines, as funding permits.

Applicants are also encouraged to submit proposals at least 6 months before the date of the event. Note that the decision process typically takes 6-8 weeks following the deadline.

PROPOSAL SUBMISSIONS

A confirmation of proposal submission will be sent within one week of the original submission. Please note that applicants must be faculty members eligible to hold Tri-Council funding at Canadian institutions.

EVALUATION PROCEDURE

All proposals are initially reviewed by the MITACS Head Office to ensure that they satisfy submission format guidelines (see below) and lie within the MITACS mandate. Applicants may be contacted at this point for further information or clarification.

Proposals which meet these guidelines will undergo external scientific review. Final decisions will be communicated within two months.

PROPOSAL FORMAT

All of sections 1-15 below are required. Incomplete proposals will be returned.

  1. Title of event
  2. Theme (required for events related to MITACS-NCE)
  3. Proposed dates (start date and end date0
  4. Location (city and province)
  5. Type of activity (conference & workshop, seminar series, student training, industry event). Applicant can list two types per event.
  6. Organizing Committee (names, affiliations, complete contact information). Identify the primary contact
  7. Executive summary of scientific and other objectives in lay terms (max. 100 words) which may appear in public announcements
  8. Other details of the scientific objectives, including:
    • intended audience
    • history or background of the proposed topic
    • recent progress
    • objectives for networking, training or outreach
    • involvement of the non-academic community, if relevant
    • possible future directions
  9. Relevance to MITACS and/or provincial priorities
  10. Participants (tentative list of invited speakers and participants including affiliations)
  11. Budget, itemizing
    • Income statement that lists all funding either requested or already obtained
    • Expense statement listing major anticipated expenses
    • Total amount being requested of MITACS
  12. Other sources of financial support, including the amount requested or committed
  13. Organizational services being requested of MITACS (see below)
  14. Letters of support from the home institution and/or partner organizations (strongly encouraged)

ORGANIZATIONAL SERVICES

Applicants are also encouraged to request in-kind organizational support from MITACS. Available services include:

  • Design and maintenance of the event website, including an on-line speaker abstract submission system;
  • Access to the MITACS event registration system. This system allows for the creation and maintenance of a registration database,  credit card processing, issuing of registration receipts, production of delegate badges, and generation of event statistics;
  • Budget management, including review of suppliers and venue charges, monitoring of incoming invoices, and processing of travel claims; and
  • Event promotion as appropriate.

If any such services are being requested of MITACS, then this should be clearly indicated in the proposal under item 13.
