Stem cells and other pluripotent cells are under active investigation for the development of new therapeutic treatments to regenerate and repair diseased and damaged tissues. Published studies indicate that some mesenchymal cells derived from adult human hair follicles exhibit stem cell properties and can form different cells types if they are given specific biological signals without the need to genetically modify the cells.

Non-Viral delivery of insulin and IL-10 to the intestine for immunotherapy for type 1 diabetes

There is increasing evidence suggesting a link exists between the gut immune system and several autoimmune diseases, including diabetes. The industrial partner of this project, enGene, has developed an effective non-viral based technology for the delivery of genes to the intestine. enGene has demonstrated the feasibility of delivering IL-10, which is an anti-inflammatory cytokine, to the intestine and showed therapeutic efficacy in inflammatory bowel disease.

Development of a 3D in vivo Metastasis Model

Recent developments in cancer treatment have greatly improved patient survival and quality of life; however, tumour cells that invade and migrate to vital organs, such as lung and brain, are very difficult to treat successfully. We will develop and validate a 3D in vivo zebrafish model that will allow us to inject human cancer cells into the yolk sac of the fish and monitor how invasive the cancer cells are. We will test the accuracy of the model by comparing cell behavior in the zebrafish to those in standard invasion assays.

Correlation of Coronary and Myocardial Strain Profiles for Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Year Two

Throughout my Doctoral Studies I have used various approaches to evaluate and/or predict the behaviour of cardiovascular structures in the setting of acquired disease. These have been focussed on two key methodologies: insilico testing aimed at predicting functional responses to therapeutic intervention, such as mechano-electric Finite Element Method (FEM) modelling of the left atrium strains and stresses in response to hypertension, and fluiddynamic FEM modelling of abdominal aortic aneurysms.
