Molecular Profiling of Survivin in Different Human Cancers

Survivin, a member of the inhibitors of the apoptosis protein family, is involved in multiple critical pathways of cancer cell growth and survival. Because of its selective expression in cancer cells but not in normal adult tissues, survivin is an attractive target for different cancer treatments. Immunovaccine Inc. (IMV) has developed a therapeutic cancer vaccine, DPX-Survivac, targeting survivn-rich cancer cells. The description should also indicate.

Isolation, characterization and culture maintenance of stem cells from human hair follicle mesenchyme

Stem cells and other pluripotent cells are under active investigation for the development of new therapeutic treatments to regenerate and repair diseased and damaged tissues. Published studies indicate that some mesenchymal cells derived from adult human hair follicles exhibit stem cell properties and can form different cells types if they are given specific biological signals without the need to genetically modify the cells.

Non-Viral delivery of insulin and IL-10 to the intestine for immunotherapy for type 1 diabetes

There is increasing evidence suggesting a link exists between the gut immune system and several autoimmune diseases, including diabetes. The industrial partner of this project, enGene, has developed an effective non-viral based technology for the delivery of genes to the intestine. enGene has demonstrated the feasibility of delivering IL-10, which is an anti-inflammatory cytokine, to the intestine and showed therapeutic efficacy in inflammatory bowel disease.

Alteration of plant cell wall structure for improvement ofbiomass hydrolysis

Biobased products, mostly derived from plant biomass, have the potential to improve the sustainability of Canada’s natural resources and environmental quality while competing economically. Plant biomass, composed primarily of cell walls and modification of cell wall properties has the potential to improve biomass conversion to biobased products such as biofuels. Progress towards achieving this goal is currently impeded by a lack of knowledge of how cell walls are assembled and how their structure affects the processing of biomass.

Joining lifestyle and cognitive assessment with Fit Brains Trainer data: Can Fit Brains brain fitness apps tell us what a “smarter” lifestyle look like?

Rosetta Stone Canada collects user demographic and performance data from Fit Brains Trainer (brain fitness training games), Cognitive Assessment, and Lifestyle Assessment mobile apps. Data from the three apps can be linked and analyzed to answer research questions such as how lifestyle factors can influence brain training habits and outcome. This internship will: 1. Statistically explore raw data in Cognitive and Lifestyle Assessment databases 2. Statistically normalize data in Cognitive and Lifestyle Assessment databases 3.

Development of a 3D in vivo Metastasis Model

Recent developments in cancer treatment have greatly improved patient survival and quality of life; however, tumour cells that invade and migrate to vital organs, such as lung and brain, are very difficult to treat successfully. We will develop and validate a 3D in vivo zebrafish model that will allow us to inject human cancer cells into the yolk sac of the fish and monitor how invasive the cancer cells are. We will test the accuracy of the model by comparing cell behavior in the zebrafish to those in standard invasion assays.

Novel product and process development for berry powder productinusing enzyme technology

The research aims to develop new technology for production of nutritional berry powders with lower production cost and higher quality. The project will test the properties of the raw material and formulate new method for processing the sample for simpler and cost effective production process. With the outcome of this project, the partner organization will be able to sell high quality product and gain a higher profit margin. The intern will get an oppourtunity to implement the principles of fundamental science in an industrial framework.

Correlation of Coronary and Myocardial Strain Profiles for Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Year Two

Throughout my Doctoral Studies I have used various approaches to evaluate and/or predict the behaviour of cardiovascular structures in the setting of acquired disease. These have been focussed on two key methodologies: insilico testing aimed at predicting functional responses to therapeutic intervention, such as mechano-electric Finite Element Method (FEM) modelling of the left atrium strains and stresses in response to hypertension, and fluiddynamic FEM modelling of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Simplified Identification of Insects using Software Tools and Digital Photography

Identification of insect prey is essential for understanding the foraging behaviours of insectivorous bat and bird predators. The intern will develop software tools that will aid a skilled entomologist with the rapid identification of insects from photographs taken from field collecting sites.
