Development of Colour-Changing Indicator Label for Healthcare Applications

Lunanos Inc. and Ryerson University's School of Graphic Communications Management are seeking to collaborate on a six-month project to develop an innovative colour-changing indicator label that will be used in healthcare facilities to track the cleaning of various equipment and surfaces to reduce the frequency of healthcare-associated infections (HAI). In Canada, 1 in 10 patients admitted to a hospital picks up an infection and it is estimated that 30-50% of these cases are preventable through better infection prevention and control.

Informative Art Simulations and Games for Improving Energy Awareness in the Home

While energy conservation in the home is an important part of reducing our ecological footprint most people do not understand or even realize how their energy consumption works and how they can manage it. In-home displays offer the opportunity to help become more aware, but often do not fit into a home’s aesthetics, typically relegated to an unobvious location after the novelty “wears off”. They also provided little opportunity for interaction and learning.

The associated internship project seeks to advance the state of game design through the formation and application of new theories for greater user engagement and cognitive analysis, and adapt into an agile game development methodology.

Integrated polarization rotator with relaxed fabrication tolerances for mass production of photonic integrated circuits

The precise management of the state of polarization of the light that is generated and all-optically processed within a photonic integrated chip (PIC) is of utmost relevance towards the conception of polarization-independent photonic integrated systems. This proposal aims to conduct an assessment of various design options of polarization converters for the specific application mandated by the immediate needs of our industry partner: a polarization independent large-scale PIC.

From visual analysis to visual analytics

Visual analytics “the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces” is a new approach to the timely and effective analysis of complex technical and operational systems. Our previous MITACS internships at Aeroinfo applied this scientific approach to mixed-initiative human/computational analysis to improve aircraft safety & reliability analysis and business planning, resulting in changes to aircraft design and pilot training.

User interfaces for health care apps can improve the quality of life of patients, and help them to have active lives despite their condition. In this fact, we highlight the importance of creating a well-designed interface for health care apps to support patients monitoring key parameters, recording daily personal facts, and treatment adherence. In this research project the main objective is to apply visual communication methods into the design of user interface for health care purposes, in order to create an exceptional and innovative tool.

An Holistic Approach to Complex UX Design

As the scope of design has become more complex - designers have moved from designing products, to technology, experiences, environments and more recently services. This progression in design, its implications, serves the need for the exploration of more holistic approaches to leverage designers’ understanding of these complex problems. Furthermore it identifies the need for designers to utilize and adopt new methodologies to better understand their users and support the plural perspective in designing for multi-channel experiences.
