Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Relations in Canada

This project will create a timeline that traces the development of Canada though moments that are significant in Indigenous peoples’ relationship with non-Indigenous Canadians. From information available through historical archives and sources, the intern will identify key moments in Canada’s history that have shaped relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people such as the establishment of the first town in Canada, the first residential school and the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report.

Understanding collaborative community-based mental health services for adults 50 and over in the South Okanagan through an environmental scan and social network analysis

Mental health is an important health issue. Adults 50 and over with a mental health concern, particularly in rural communities have unique challenges. In the South Okanagan, research found there was a lack of community services/supports available and organizations offering these services and supports did not work well together. The aim of this study is to identify current services/supports for adults 50 and over with a mental health concern in the South Okanagan and to understand how organizations offering these services/supports work together.

Framework for dialogue and learning with parents and professionals in the Central Okanagan; an examination of learning (related to stigmatization) across relations of power.

This research will create opportunities for reflection and dialogue with a group of professionals in the Central Okanagan regarding parents’ perceptions and experiences of stigmatization. Dialogue will focus on enhancing professionals' understanding of underlying structural and social factors contributing to stigmatization and the implications of this understanding for their practice. The research draws from Participatory Action Research and Critical Pedagogy.

Ethics in Long Term Care

In order to understand how public policy promotes and/or hinders the development of an ethical culture in LTC, facilities must explore the interaction between public policy, organizational policies and procedures, and frontline staff ethical decisions and actions. LTC organizations want to provide high quality of care, and quality of life, to the older adult population they serve, and want the organizational policies and procedures to facilitate such quality care.

Social Impact Analysis and Program Evaluation of GEM Mentorship Program

The project seeks to provide a program evaluation of the Girls E-Mentorship Innovation (GEM) youth mentoring program. GEM’s program is a socially innovative approach linking high school aged girls with successful professional leaders in the employment sector, to support the development of positive attitudes and future career attainment. Using mixed methods, this project develops key outcome measures assessing the effectiveness of the GEM program, along with providing a general assessment of the overall economic and social impact the organization has in its local area.
