Preterm neonates ill-adapted to the extra uterine environment are prone to increased inflammation in multiple organs and the proinflammatory interleukine IL-1b has been closely implicated in brain injury associated with preterm birth (PTB). Notably, PTB survivors have a greater propensity to develop ischemic brain lesions long after birth. Here, we hypothesize that the neural vasculature of premature infants becomes irresponsive to hypoxic-ischemic stress.
The cost of developing new drugs is now widely acknowledged by industry leaders as prohibitive, with some estimates now in excess of $ 5B per drug. It is imperative that new approaches are developed to mitigate the cost and time required to bring new drugs to market. To help achieve this, we contend that new techniques in machine learning must be brought to bear on the drug development process.
Emphysema, a lung disease that millions of Canadians currently suffer from, has few safe and non-invasive options available. One of the features of emphysema is the lack of proper blood flow in the diseased lungs and this results in poor gas exchange. IKOMED Technologies Inc. and the two interns will test an innovative technology that has the potential to remove diseased lungs non-surgically. Together they will test and optimize this application using small rats to check both safety and effectiveness of this new treatment method. IKOMED Technologies Inc.
Yeast is arguably the most important industrial microorganism in the world, playing a critical role in the fermentation of food and beverage products, as well as cellular factory for production of biofuels, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. In order to produce such a range of products efficiently and economically, specialized yeast must be optimized for each task. Current tools for yeast optimization are lacking, especially in the sectors of food, beverage, and feed, where consumers demand non-GMO yeast products.
The goal of this research is to improve breast cancer local control and reduce treatment side effects by demonstrating that a new cold plasma technology, which generates locally specific reactive oxygen species, has an additive positive treatment impact when combined with conventional radiotherapy. This project has the potential to enable a Canadian technology, to become an adjuvant for radiotherapy.
Technological challenges in the pulping process of cellulosic fibers of different origins that can provide an optimal eco-responsible, biodegradable, recyclable and compostable alternative to polluting styrofoam packaging. AecopaQ stands out by using natural fibers grown and processed locally to the production of packaging trays for the food industry. AecopaQ is part of Canada's sustainable development agenda.
Over the past decade, Jamaica has been described as having an increasingly high rate of violence, of which sexual violence against young people (mostly girls) is a silent emergency. Community activists and researchers addressing the issue of sexual violence within Jamaica posit that the culture of silence is a main contributor to the continued perpetuation of this atrocity. Sport is a conduit that addresses violence and encourages social inclusion and peacebuilding globally.
Ubisoft has an extensive database of 3D scanned heads. It would be convenient to use it to mix-and-match parts of characters to create new human-like character heads. Lets say we want to adjust medium-scale features of the face, such as replacing the nose of one character with another nose. We will design an editing workflow allowing the artist to create a new nose from mixtures of noses found in the database.
This PDF will further our understanding of how augmented reality, an emerging technology, can improve collaborative situation awareness. In particular, this project will investigate the best ways for information to be shared when two or more individuals each use an augmented reality device. For example, in maritime environments there is always the risk of man-overboard events. Depending on the light and sea conditions it can be difficult to spot and then to share the location information with others responsible for navigation.
Automatic casting applications aim is to accurately recognise facial regions that correspond to a same actor appearing in a movie to produce described video. This project will focus on the tasks of re-identify the face of each principal actors when they appear in different scenes of a movie. This is a challenging task because although recent movies are typically high resolution, the faces are often occluded and their appearance varies significantly according to pose, scale, illumination, blur, etc.
