To meet its clients’ needs and an increasing demand for high-performance Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) solutions, Nuance established a long-term research project that focuses on refining these products for mobile applications.

Odotech, a Quebec based company, manufactures and commercializes patented electronic noses (e-noses) to measure and monitor odours at waste management plants, composting sites and industrial odor-producing plants. The company faced the challenge of lacking the necessary expertise to efficiently upgrade its product’s performance for different odour sources in various environments.
By diagnosing oral premalignant lesions that might progress to cancer and making better clinical decisions, clinicians can significantly lower the mortality rate, increase quality of life with earlier and less traumatic surgery and reduce healthcare costs.
For Michael Turcot, vice president of Research and Development at Sonomax, Mitacs Accelerate sped up the prototyping process considerably. “Kuba’s research expertise coupled with the Mitacs funding enabled us to transform the design concept of our product into a refined, working prototype that we can present to potential clients.”
For Alyssa, her Mitacs Accelerate internship was a great way to get real-world experience in her field while completing her studies. “Mitacs Accelerate builds the bridge between academic and industry by giving graduate students a chance to work with more experienced researchers, and provides exposure to research in real world settings,” she said.
Through this research project, we were able to determine where our company stands regarding [HTML5]. Yaser’s research outcome also greatly improved the foundation of our technologies and what he developed is being looked into as a new product feature that we could offer in the near future.
The Mitacs Accelerate program allowed me to work on an innovative project that is in sync with the future of a flourishing industry, especially in a city like Québec where many of the big players of the video game world work hard at developing new and cutting edge approaches to create new gaming experiences.
