Mitacs has a rich history of collaboration with networking systems and software company Ciena, placing hundreds of skilled research and development (R&D) interns from universities across Canada. Yousra Omran was one such intern, whose initial placement at Ciena led to full-time employment.
Originally from Tunisia, Omran — an Electrical Engineering PhD candidate from Laval University, whose PhD research revolved around submarine networks — was weighing her post-graduation options when she discovered, and applied to, the Mitacs Accelerate internship program at Ciena because of its key project at the time: developing algorithms to increase network capacity for land and submarine networks. It was a perfect fit.
The internship program provided me with the opportunity to find a job that I love, travel the world and have a great personal-professional balance. — Yousra Omran
Ciena awarded Omran the internship and quickly recognized her talent and skills, offering her a position with the company. “The Mitacs-Ciena internship helped me to have the best job on earth and be successful,” she says. Omran accepted and that, in turn, allowed her to “pay forward” the remainder of her internship funding to another colleague at Laval.
“The internship program provided me with the opportunity to find a job that I love, travel the world and have a great personal-professional balance,” Omran says.
And Omran has excelled at the company since, twice being nominated by her peers for the Spirit of Ciena Award, which honours employees who serve as role models for others.
