11/26/2011

Mitacs, a Canadian not-for-profit research organization headed by CEO Dr. Arvind Gupta, invites applications for its Globalink program. Globalink is an international internship program that offers undergraduate students of all disciplines (including professional streams) from around the world three-month summer research projects at universities in Canada. Mitacs Globalink bears the cost supporting the students with the research stipend which covers the program cost, accommodations, airfare, visa, health insurance and local costs. Mitacs Globalink spends around INR 4 lakh on each student towards the program.

The highly sought-after internships run approximately 12 weeks in length under the supervision of professors at Canadian universities. Students interested in the program should have a minimum CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) of 8.0 on 10 point scale, or the equivalent, as well as English proficiency. Students should be applying to Globalink for the summer before the final year of their degree along with two reference letters, one from the current academic supervisor and another from the academic project supervisor with attestation to the student's interest in, and aptitude for, research. Successful applicants will be offered the program in the summertime before their last year of study. Applications are due by 27 November 2011. For details, visit www.mitacs.ca

Applicants should furnish any 4 areas of their research interest out of the over 400 project topics given in the web site. The panel experts of the program will offer the students a suitable program out of the selected 4 topics.

"The goal of Mitacs Globalink is to build international research links between Canada and up-and-coming researchers from around the world. Mitacs hopes that, in the future, these links will develop into business and research collaborations that span the globe," said Dr. Gupta.

"In 2011, 177 undergraduate students from across India were selected from nearly 1 ,000 applicants for the Globalink program; thirteen of the students were from Anna University in Chennai. The overwhelming response from Indian students year-after-year demonstrates their research interest and we hope to see a strong response from them again this year," he added.

The summer of 2012 research internships are to include around 350 students from across India, China, Brazil and Mexico.
