Summary of Project:

Ciena wishes to build a web portal to automate certain steps of the creation of reconfiguration procedures, commonly known as EMOP (Engineering Method Of Procedure), as part of its Professional Services. These procedures, written by Ciena's network engineers, serve as an official reference document during a maintenance window and are previously reviewed and approved by all parties involved in the project (project managers, network engineers, customers, technicians)
The portal must contain a digital creation zone, eliminating the limitations due to the printable format and giving more freedom to the author when adding sections, text boxes, tables or diagrams of variable sizes.

In addition to facilitating the creation of a procedure, the portal will also serve as a collaborative space to which the various parties would have access, thus simplifying the revision and update steps. This space will also allow the engineer to time stamp each step completed during the execution of the maintenance activity to produce a report of the activity.

Research Objectives/Sub-Objectives:

  • Research on Modern Approaches to Digital Document Development and Online Collaboration Space
  • Recommendations on the strategy to adopt (portal architecture, programming language, integration of applications in a web environment)
  • Automation of sub-spots using artificial intelligence potential
  •  Proof of concept

Methodology:

    In order to assist the engineer in the process of creating an EMOP, the portal must also contain a control panel, consisting of various buttons, some of which will allow the user to add steps common to most procedures and format them automatically by adjusting information about the current project. These steps can be administrative (project number, customer name, contacts, etc.) or technical (equipment configuration, equipment handling, fiber optic connections, etc.).

    Expertise and Skills Needed:

    For the technical steps, the portal will rely on NAVA (Network Analysis and Visualization Application), an internally developed java application, to retrieve the necessary information from the network targeted by the maintenance window (network topology, impacted traffic, configuration of a node, etc.). The network segment affected by the intervention will have to be specified by the engineer when adding a step, and the variables will be updated automatically through NAVA.
