The service utilizes large environmental databases, spatial analysis techniques, and machine learning to help outdoor enthusiasts find the species, habitats and ecosystems they are interested in.

Project Description:

The project will develop a software service for mobile operating systems and desktop web browsers on the Google Maps platform. The software will be built to utilize large environmental databases, spatial analysis techniques, and machine learning to help outdoor enthusiasts find the species, habitats and ecosystems they are interested in as well as follow government rules and regulations. A social network will be available within the service for users to share photos, video and trip routes with one another and also upload data (e.g. wildlife observations) to Biosphere GPS, which will be used to improve the service.

Research Objectives:

  • Study fish and wildlife populations by building a massive citizen science data collection platform
  • Study participation in outdoor recreation throughout the year and during different seasons (hotspots, travel distances, activity preferences, demographics, etc.) 

Methodology:

  • Species habitat modeling
  • Software use metrics

Expertise and Skills Needed:

  • Software development using the Google Maps API
  • GIS knowledge and experience using GIS software and handling large databases
