Project Description:

The intern will be part of the ATCO Electricity Innovation Team and will support in delivering novel next generation prototypes that will define the future of the electricity grid in Alberta, broader Canada and globally. Some of the current projects in the portfolio includes smart EV charging, artificial intelligence based microgrids, home of the future and power systems technologies for making the electricity grid autonomous and smart. The student will be part of a horizontal team structure and will report directly to the Innovation Director.

Research Objectives/Sub-Objectives:

  • Code and deliver in a fast-paced agile environment
  • Identify requirements for new product feature sets by working closely with dev team lead and product owner
  • Express passion and drive to identify and develop emerging novel platforms for distributed energy resources (such as solar, storage, EVs), smart grids and green energy technologies

Methodology:

  • Gather customer requirements to design product specification for emerging technologies and business model offerings
  • Design a lean minimum viable product
  • Gather customer feedback weekly through an iterative approach
  • Once achieved problem-solution fit, determine scalability requirements for broader product development and deployment in grids in various outside markets.

Expertise and Skills Needed:

  • Must have prior programming experience with three or more of the following languages: Python, C#, NodeJS, Go, Scala, JavaScript, Ruby
  • Previous hands-on experience with at least one front-end framework (Angular and React preferred)
  • Good understanding and experience with MVC framework (.Net or Symfony preferred)
  • Good understanding and possess the ability to create and integrate SOAP/RESTful API
  • Prior experience or understanding of working within IaaS environment (AWS, Azure, GCP/Firebase)
  • Database experience or good understanding in building, optimizing queries, creating and working with tables, etc. (MySQL, MS SQL, PostgreSQL or Oracle).
  • Prior experience or familiarity in deploying Kubernetes/Docker containers
  • Knowledge of version control tech like Git and Mercurial (GitHub, Bit Bucket)
  • Experience or understanding of full lifecycle development (SDLC) including: Analysis, Design, Development, Testing, Release and Production
  • Familiarity with Agile software delivery and DevOps practice
  • An understanding of electrical power systems would be an asset
  • An understanding of basic machine learning/deep learning concepts would be an asset
  • Possess ability to be nimble and responsive to a constantly changing work environment
  • Have an entrepreneurial spirit with the leadership skills to be autonomous with minimal guidance
  • Interest in working as part of a larger team to define objectives and collaborate to meet these challenges
  • Ability to work independently and deliver results on time
  • Interest in participating in a larger pool of students/interns that integrate into other projects across a variety of business units within the company
