Please describe the project.: 

The project will be focused on the improvement of current X-ray backscatter system to detect the presence illicit substances.  The improvement of the image shall be a combination of X-ray sources, scintillators and software algorithm.

Research Objectives:

Develop a rugged method to detect illicit substances (narcotics, explosives and improvised explosives devices)  based on their backscatter information.
Investigate different scintillator materials to improve on the light output.
Develop an algorithm to automaticcally detect threats.

Methodology:

Investigate advantages and disadvantages of various X-Ray sources

Required expertise/skills: 

X-Ray imaging. Electronics, analog and digital signal processing. C and C++ Programming , labview or MatLAb. Gas phase ion chemistry. Spectroscopy. CAD design. High voltage circuit. Preferred disciplines: Physics and Physical Chemistry Post-Doc). Project duration: 1 year.
