Describe the project.: 

The TELUS Postdoctoral Fellowship, in partnership with Mitacs, provides an opportunity for early-career scholars to shape Canadian policy for the next generation of telecommunications technologies. The fellowship provides two years of funding – valued at C$75,000 per year – and a 2-year placement with TELUS Communications to facilitate the Fellow’s research activities, cultivate their business skillset, and provide an interface with Government and key stakeholders. TELUS invites research proposals focusing upon spectrum policy, 5G policy, and other contemporary issues in Canadian telecommunications policy from ambitious candidates who are passionate about the role of telecommunications in improving the lives of Canadians.


Design and execute substantial research projects on contemporary telecommunications policy
Publish research in academic journals, conference proceedings, and policy magazines
Perform detailed and comprehensive jurisdictional, technological, and literature reviews to assist in shaping Canadian telecommunications policy
Effectively summarize and present research findings at internal and external meetings to non-experts
Liaise with experts within TELUS, Government officials, and key stakeholders
Collaborate with the broader policy team at TELUS

Required expertise/skills: 


• A Ph.D. granted within the last 5 years with a focus in economics, law, engineering, technology policy or a related field

• Strong evaluative and analytical skills demonstrated by an exemplary academic record

• Evidenced capacity to convey complex research findings to a variety of stakeholders

• A proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively

• A demonstrated interest in telecommunications, public policy, and research


• A Ph.D. focusing specifically on telecommunications policy

• Knowledge of Canadian telecommunications and Canadian regulatory frameworks

• Prior private or public sector experience

• Experience in policy advocacy
