About the company:
veritree is a blockchain enabled platform that supports project level monitoring for tree planting projects. It was created as the sister company of tentree, a sustainable apparel company that plants ten trees for every item of clothing sold. To date, tentree has planted over 60 million trees. To ensure the sustainability of restoration operations, veritree was developed to enable accurate ground-level data collection. The platform records data on species, density, survival rates, as well as contributions towards the sustainable development goals.
Describe the project.:
veritree aims to create robust carbon accounting methodologies for all major tree species globally. With the increasing utilization of LiDAR and remote sensing technologies, there are opportunities for increasing accuracy. However, understanding the carbon sequestration capacity of different tree species is challenging. There are a plethora of different methodologies being used to estimate Above Ground Carbon (AGC) and Below Ground Carbon (BGC). Moreover, studies have found that landscape features matter, particularly when considering in-land and oceanic mangroves.
The project aims to create a methodology for carbon accounting for different mangrove species in Kenya, Madagascar, and Indonesia. The research will entail conducting a review of the current literature, using project level data and writing a white paper or article to be published in a peer reviewed journal. This methodology will be an integral component in the veritree platform, encouraging corporations to increase their investments in Nature-based Solutions, accelerating the scaling of reforestation and afforestation projects, and working towards a climate+ future.
Ideally a post-doc with expertise in Carbon Accounting, Remote Sensing, Forest Restoration, LiDAR, Forest Technology.
