About the company:

Raven Reads is Canada’s first Indigenous subscription box and wholesale giftware company that helps people around the world do and feel good by connecting them to Indigenous cultures, books, and wholesale giftware. Since our inception in 2017, we have distributed over 20,000 boxes around the world. Raven Reads is rapidly expanding our wholesale products and transitioning into third-party fulfillment to leverage our expertise and further support our Indigenous and female-identifying suppliers across North America.

Describe the project.:

As Raven Reads has grown, so has the demand to support our ecosystem of suppliers that we curate from. Since our inception, we have invested over $500,000 CAD back into the Indigenous economy and we are looking to further innovate the level of support we provide to Indigenous suppliers across North America. To do this, Raven Reads is looking to vastly bolster our technology and design a proprietary fully integrated e-commerce, inventory and warehouse management, and Vendor Management System built with Indigenous and female-identifying entrepreneurs in mind.

This suite of proprietary software will enable us to become much more competitive and further assist other Indigenous e-commerce businesses to overcome barriers to their own growth and scale such as high transactional fees and limited ability to handle product fulfillment. This new software will allow Raven Reads to broaden our product and service offerings (increase revenue) while also having a ripple effect in supporting the growth of our past and potential suppliers (service delivery).

We are looking for assistance to scope out a new digital platform and develop a go-to-market strategy including costs and timeline.

At a minimum, this new software platform will need to:

  • Facilitate vendor management (tracking, invoicing, data)
  • Provide a front-end e-commerce marketplace for selling both Raven Reads and other vendor products
  • Provide an inventory and warehouse management system
  • Transition away from Shopify to reduce third party app and plug-in fees, transactional fees, subscription fees
  • Offer a digital service that helps Indigenous suppliers scale and access greater technology to sell their goods

Required expertise/skills:

We require someone with expertise and understanding in both front and back-end development, specifically in the realm of e-commerce, inventory and warehouse management systems, and vendor management. This person will need to be able to scope out a rough framework of how this software package can be developed, what resourcing it will require, and what the approximate costs and timeline will look like.
