Phenols-Functionalized Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes as a New Class of Antioxidants for the Prevention of Degenerative Diseases

The present project proposes a new type of antioxidant drug as a way to reduce genetically the probability of appearance of degenerative diseases, e.g. different cancers, Alzheimer’s disease and Atherosclerosis. The general idea is to combine two different types of compounds with antioxidant properties: nanomaterials and certain molecules extracted from a cuban plant with the goal to enhance their biological properties. In other words: if we combine two antioxidants in one, the resultant is even better. To design these new drugs we will use in principle computer modeling.

3D-Printing for Remote Industries (3DPRI) in Harsh Environments: On the post-processing of a wire arc additive manufactured 420 martensitic stainless steel for enhanced functionality and service life

Newly developed additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, also known as 3D-printing, are able to fabricate complex geometry components at a relatively high deposition rate, the lowest possible number of production cycles, and minimum materials waste in contrast with the conventional subtractive fabrication techniques. By drastic reduction in the fabrication time and production steps, minimizing the on-hold inventory, additive manufacturing technologies have the potential to revolutionize the industrial manufacturing sectors.

AttentionTrip: a gamified tool for measuring the networks of attention

Attention is an important part of everyday functioning. We use it to interact with the world around us and take in new information. ‘AttentionTrip’ is a sophisticated tool that allows clinicians and researchers to measure the different components of attention, while it feels like you are playing a videogame. With this tool, we can see how attention changes across age groups, and in the future how it may differ in clinical populations, like people with autism or ADHD. It also allows us to see if treatments being provided to people with attention-issues are actually working.

Multi-channel Fluidic Cartridges for Parallel Nanopore Sensing

Solid-state nanopores are tiny holes in thin membranes comparable to the size of individual biomolecules like protein or DNA. They are using as sensors to detect these molecules one at a time, and have the potential to revolutionize DNA sequencing, personalized medicine, point-of-care diagnostics, and next-generation information storage methods, but have not been able to so far due to the high cost and inability to scale of the methods traditional used to fabricate them. We recently developed a method that allows to inexpensive, scalable fabrication of nanopore sensors.

AR Marine Visualization System

A sailor needs to obtain real-time information about the status of the sailboat and also derive an accurate approximation of the behaviour of the surrounding environment, in order to safely and successfully sail a boat. We also aim to investigate how providing vital knowledge using an immersive approach will affect the cognitive load on the sailor, thus potentially enhancing efficiency and safety at sea.

Application of machine learning techniques to control surface quality of as-printed wire arc additive manufactured components

Nowadays, the wire arc additive manufacturing is making its path toward providing benefits to aerospace, defense, and oil and gas sectors, ascribed to the process capacity to fabricate components with minimum waste of material and lead time. However, the main challenges associated with the WAAM that have hindered the wide-spread application of the technology include the irregular and random quality of the WAAM fabricated surfaces.

Effect of agro?climatic conditions on the cannabinoid quantities in hemp crops

We want to determine the relationship between weather such as rainfall and temperature on outdoor grown hemp. Specifically what these variables do in terms of changing the content of THC and CBD in certain varieties of hemp. Our goal is to give farmers the knowledge so that they can determine when is optimal time to harvest their crop based on that years weather if they want to be below a .3 thc content, and have a high CBD content. However, the research we do will lend itself to farmers seeking other CBD and THC outcomes in their crops.

A novel intraocular injectable platform for long-term treatment of retinal diseases.

Retinal diseases are the leading causes of blindness in Canada. Retinal diseases are currently treated by monthly or bimonthly intraocular injections of biologics. At the Sheardown lab, we are developing a new injectable hydrogel that can provide prolonged treatment for retinal diseases. Upon injection, the new treatment forms a transparent solid depot inside the eye that doesn’t interfere with the patient’s vision. The depot provides sustained release of the biologics over several months and is completely resorbable after delivery of its payload.

Turn-Key Robot Motion Planning Solutions

To increase the speed at which companies can develop robots we plan to create a package containing a number of key path-finding programs which can be easily connected with any robot. This will make it easier to produce both commercial and experimental robots without the need to create a path-finding program unique to the robot. We also plan to evaluate the possibility of offering expert assistance in choosing and tuning the available programs included in the package.

Using drone and remote sensing technology to increase profitability and climate resilience of potato production

Potatoes are among the top five crops worldwide. With the rate of climate change accelerating, the pressures on potato production systems (e.g., heat stress, water stress, pest pressures) will intensify adaptation efforts. Although climate change is already happening, it is often seen as an abstract and distant problem that diverts resources from current production challenges. However, drone and remote sensing technology can reconcile this false dichotomy. They can help growers better respond to crop needs with targeted use of inputs, which improves the bottom line.
