Wide-Complex Tachyarrhythmia (WCT) is an abnormality in which the heart rate is elevated and QRS complex duration is increased. An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a simple and quick test used to review heart functioning, so ECG images can be used to determine whether a patient is having an abnormal heart rhythm such as WCT. A WCT diagnosis based on the ECG can be difficult as it can take a lot of time and considerable expertise to make an accurate interpretation.
The Fearless Physical Activity workshops are designed to educate and introduce children with congenital heart disease (CHD) to physical activities that are safe for their health. These workshops will provide opportunities for children with CHD and their families to try new activities and to learn about the benefits of lifelong physical activity, specific to those with CHD. The research project undertaken by the intern will look at the effect of these workshops on daily physical activity, physical activity motivation and self-esteem.
Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are considered the top candidates among electrochemical energy storage systems (ESS) due to their high energy density which has triggered the growth market of popular devices such as cell phones, computers, electric vehicles (EV) etc. As ESS, LIBs are continuously charged and discharged during their utility. The charge/discharge cycle is known to contribute towards their degradation depending on the charging protocol and operating conditions.
The aim of the proposed research is to investigate the cellular mechanistic effects of supplementation with a hypocaloric meal replacement product (Optifast-900; Nestlé Canada) containing cysteine and glycine, which are amino acid precursors of the antioxidant glutathione. Impaired cellular glutathione redox normally occurs with aging and metabolic disorders, however, this study will focus on a population in which we have previously observed impaired muscle cellular glutathione redox and slow weight loss during the exclusive dietary consumption of Optifast-900.
