Professor FAQs
I submitted a project proposal and was not matched with a Globalink research intern. Why did this happen?
Globalink research interns may not be matched with a project due to one of the following:
- Students have not selected the project during the application process
- Students do not have the appropriate skill set or experience to ensure a successful match with their selected project(s)
- The number of applicants exceeds the number of placements possible with available Globalink Research Internship funding
Can I nominate a specific international student to become a Globalink research intern and work on my research project?
No. Globalink Research Internships are highly competitive. Students must apply during the call for student applications in the summer. If eligible for the program, students are further evaluated and shortlisted, and will go through the matching process. Only Mitacs can confirm matches. Students can be matched with any project that best suits their research interests and experience.
What countries does the Globalink Research Internship partner with?
Please verify the “Student application” tab for more information.
Which disciplines is a Globalink Research Internship open to?
Globalink Research Internships are open to all academic disciplines including humanities, social sciences, and STEM disciplines.
I submitted a research project to Globalink for the summer of 2024. What is its status?
Please refer to our "GRI cycle and important dates" section. All faculty applicants will be notified of the status of their projects in July. If your project was accepted, you will be notified of next steps.
Can I have more than one Globalink Research Intern placement per year?
Mitacs encourages professors to submit multiple projects, as this may increase the chance of a successful match. You will be asked to determine the number of interns you can host for each project you submit. Matches are determined by student suitability, preference, funding constraints, and other factors and, as such, Mitacs cannot guarantee that projects will be matched until the final results are announced in February 2024.
Does the Globalink Research Internship provide funding for professors who host Globalink research interns?
No, we do not provide financial compensation to host faculty members. All funds are given directly to the student.
I’m a postdoctoral fellow. Can I host a Globalink research intern?
In order to host a Globalink research intern, you must be an official faculty member at one of our participating institutions.
Can professors from any Canadian university apply for Globalink Research Internships?
Yes, professors from Mitacs full, associate and honourary university partners are eligible to apply. The list of our academic partners can be found here.
How much are Globalink Research Internships worth? What amount can I put on my CV?

What should I include under the Research section of the application form?
Applicants are responsible for including any relevant research skills, interests, and achievements relevant to your academic discipline or field of research. This section is used to evaluate your application after the call closes. If your application moves forward to the matching phase, this section will also be seen by professors. Please include any and all information that you would wish professors to know about your research skills that make you a suitable candidate for their projects.
Applicants are required to provide original work. Copying the work of others is a misrepresentation and a form of academic misconduct. Mitacs does not tolerate such activity and any submissions that misrepresent the work of others are automatically rejected.
I don’t have all my documents ready yet. If I start my application now, can I log back in and finish it later?
Yes, you may start your application, save your work, and return to complete your application. All applications must be complete with all the required documentation by the submission deadline. Incomplete applications received after the deadline will not accepted.

You must apply for a minimum of three and a maximum of seven projects in at least three Canadian provinces.
You will be able to search the database of projects by institution name, province, and keywords.
Can I work with a Canadian professor who does not have a project on the list?
No. You must apply to a project that is in the online GRI project database.
My undergraduate degree is in the social sciences; do you have projects in this field?
Globalink Research Internships are open to all disciplines and many projects are interdisciplinary. We encourage you to do both specific and general searches using the keyword search to find projects in your discipline.
Check the eligibility section to determine if your international partner organization has limitations or rules regarding disciplines.
Can I apply for a project that is not in my academic discipline?
Yes. Some projects may require interns from various disciplines and academic departments. For example, a professor in the health sciences may be looking for a student with a computer science background to assist with a data project. To ensure you are viewing all the projects that may apply to you, do multiple keyword searches. You must ensure that your background is relevant to the research topic and skills/experience requested by the professor in the description of the project.

After you have applied
I have completed my 2023 Globalink Research Internship application. What happens now?
Mitacs will notify you of any updates by email and your profile on the Globalink Student Platform will provide you with the current status of your application.
Due to the high volume of applications, individual requests for status updates cannot be provided. What are my responsibilities if I am accepted as a Globalink research intern?
Each Globalink research intern is required to:
- Agree to a Code of Conduct and liability waiver before they are admitted into the program. Failure to abide by the Code of Conduct and liability waiver could result in a denial of your certificate of completion and/or expulsion from the Globalink Research Internship, depending on the severity and nature of the misconduct.

Details of your arrangements and actions required will be made available to you after your internship is confirmed, in early 2023.
What are the expectations and hours of work once I am in Canada?
Interns are required to work 40 hours a week, five days a week for 12 consecutive weeks. Most interns work during regular business hours (e.g., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), but this depends on your specific arrangement with your host professor.
You are expected to let your host professor know if you are missing time from your research for any reason, such as due to illness or to attend a Mitacs event.
What kinds of events and courses will I be invited to attend?
Mitacs invites interns to attend industry events, government events, and professional development courses during their time in Canada. Attendance is not mandatory, but we highly recommend that interns take part to fully experience the benefits of Globalink Research Internship.
