Design and fabrication of a low-cost, comprehensive incoming material inspection system for thermoplastics

Fused filament fabrication is an additive manufacturing (AM) process in which thermoplastic material is pushed through a heated nozzle to create objects layer by layer. This is typically the AM process people associate with 3D printing. The incoming material for the FFF process has a direct impact on the machine performance and the final product. Our goal is to create an incoming quality inspection mechanism that is fast and reliable, and can be replicated for other companies or institutions. The data collected for the system developed with Pep Corp will be made public and available to suppliers and customers.
