Design and Synthesis of Specific Inhibitors of CYP26 for Blocking Retinoic Acid Metabolism: A Safer Approach to Retinoid Therapy for Skin Disease

OBJECTIVE; We will advance our development of novel specific inhibitors of the retinoic acid (RA) metabolizing P450 enzymes, CYP26A1 and CYP26B1, to treat skin disorders - an approach that will have significant safety advantages over current retinoid therapies. These inhibitors will be used primarily to target cystic acne but will also be evaluated for their therapeutic potential in treating other skin disorders including actinic keratosis, rosacea, oral leukoplakia and skin cancer.

Development and Scale Up of Precursors for Atomic Layer Deposition

Research in the Barry lab has been following two independent streams of precursor development: NHC complexes of group 11 amides for the deposition of metal films, and development of designed iminopyrrolidinates to quench low temperature thermal decomposition mechanisms. A series of novel N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-containing copper(I) amides have been shown to be viable ALD precursors. This family is represented by the compounds 4,5-dimethyl-1,3-diisopropyl-imidazol-2-ylidene copper hexamethyldisilazide, which was synthesized and structurally characterized.

Precursors for this billion dollar industrial sector are required for a variety of metal and non-metal films, including copper, ruthenium, and titanium nitride and tantalum nitride, to name a few. All of these films are metallic conductors involved in interconnect technology (i.e., micro- and nano-scale wiring) for microelectronic devices.

Development of rechargeable hybrid aqueous batteries for cost-effective, large scale energy storage

High capacity battery systems are becoming as important as their smaller analogues which are currently in use in mobile devices. Rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs serve as uninterruptible power supplies or energy stores in electronic vehicles (EVs) and realize the EV technology for many countries. This promotes sustainable development while addressing air quality and climate change. The main challenges are to increase the affordability, power density, and safety for such lithium-ion batteries.

Design of Novel Self-Cooling Can Systems

Temperature control is very important to a modern day society. Certain beverages, such as soda pop, alcoholic beverages, and even water are refrigerated so that they are more refreshing to drink. This project objective is to design novel environmentally benign and emission-free self-cooling beverage cans. Two different systems with different cooling approached are considered. The first system is built on chemical reaction that does not evolve any harm output that the user will be exposed to, and the other system uses the physical principle of cooling with expansion and absorption.

Mathematical Modelling of Coke Formation in Thermal Cracking Units

Thermal cracking of ethane (from natural gas) is used to make ethylene, a chemical used for producing plastics. Thermal cracking occurs in metal tubes that pass through a furnace, where heat generated in the combustion chamber outside of the tubes makes the cracking reactions inside the tubes occur at high rates. Coke is an undesirable side product that deposits on the inner surface of the tubes during ethane cracking, influencing rates of chemical reactions and the distribution of chemical products that emerge from the reactor.

Synthesis of functionalized pyrimidines through use of the Blaise reaction

Pyrimidines are a key and increasingly popular part of many biologically and pharmaceutically important components. This project will endeavor to develop a new and efficacious synthesis of versions of these molecules which would otherwise be difficult to produce. A key part of the revenue stream for Snieckus Innovations is the sale of molecules such as these for use as building blocks in the chemical industry – most usually in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical sciences.


Carbohydrate active enzymes are used widely in the commercial sector and in industries ranging from food processing to biofuel generation. Of these enzymes, the class known as glycoside phosphorylases has seemingly been overlooked by industry even given their noted advantages over related classes currently in use. Given the fact that a limited number of these enzymes have been identified, we think this presents a timely niche opportunity to develop a commercially available suite of these enzymes in collaboration with MetaMixis.
