StepWise originated as a project created for the FOBIT (Faculty of Business Information Technology) event at the University Centre, February 28, 2008. Subsequently the project won 1st place for Best New Health-Related Idea in the 2008 IDC Ideas Competition. The StepWise concept involves a novel and unique usage of dance pads and free downloadable dance software. Although dance gaming technology has existed for some time, it has not previously been used to connect youth with each other via a webcam and web connection. PacifiConnections Inc.
This internship is in partnership with PREVNet. Researchers have found that bystander intervention during bullying episodes among children stops the bullying in the majority of instances. A number of constructs have recently emerged as potential correlates and predictors for bystander intervention, or lack thereof, and have not yet been studied within this age group (i.e., 10 and 12 year olds). These constructs have also not been investigated together within one study to examine their individual relative contributions (and potentially cumulative effect) to bystander behaviours.
The internship’s broad objective is to improve the underlying mechanisms of Quillsoft’s flagship writing tool, WordQ, which is developed at Bloorview Kids Rehab, Canada’s largest children’s rehabilitation teaching hospital. WordQ software helps individuals to write by suggesting words and phrases based on what a user has already written. This is accomplished by a combination of statistics and grammar, which will be the focus of the intern’s activities. Currently, WordQ uses a short context window that precedes the current word to make its predictions.
This research focuses on the design, implementation and assessment of an innovative community based learning project between The Land Conservancy of British Columbia (Enterprises) Ltd. (TLC‐E) and The Land Conservancy of British Columbia (TLC). TLC‐E is a profit‐oriented business unit of TLC that delivers community based learning on a fee‐for‐service basis in support of The Land Conservancy’s overall mission, which includes providing opportunities for the public to take part in experiential education programs that inspire stewardship of their home‐place.
This internship will investigate the role which demographic, familial, individual and school level factors play in students’ pursuit of educational pathways in New Brunswick. Differing educational pathways can be defined as being either typical (e.g. a high academic achieving student pursuing post-secondary education), or atypical (e.g. a high academic achieving student dropping out of high school or completing high school but not pursuing further education). Previous research has shown that academic achievement is the greatest predictor of future educational pathways.

Assessment of learned knowledge needs to focus on two distinct aspects: knowledge retention and associated cognitive skills. Knowledge retention not only refers to the ability to recall learned facts but also the ability to understand the relationship between these facts (ie to understand the structure of the learned domain knowledge).
Castle Rock Research provides quality curriculum-based educational resources to students, parents and educators, both online and in print. This project involves the design of a parameter-based statistical algorithm to automatically generate math questions for multimedia education applications. Rather than relying on a curriculum designer to create questions one by one, multiple questions can be generated by the algorithm. By varying the parameter values, the model is able to control the difficulty level of the questions.
