With schools closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many education outreach companies that offer in-class summer camps are having to pivot to virtual classes to adjust to the new normal. Their main challenge is how and where to spend their marketing budget efficiently to attract new students. They traditionally advertise locally such as in schools or communities which are not available to them now. Therefore, their advertising budgets are moving to digital marketing such as social media and search engines.
The current project aims to examine the knowledgebase of both teaching candidate (pre-service) and in-service teachers in 21st century competencies of digital literacy and computational thinking. Additionally, this project seeks to understand how these competencies may be incorporated into faculty of education training programs for teaching candidates. The intern will design, administer, and analyze surveys in partnership with the partner organization through professional development and learning opportunities for in-service teachers.
The current public health emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we socialize with eachother, how we access health care, and our economic conditions over a short period of time. For people who are marginalized, these changes may cause decreases in income, loss of social support and community connections, unstable home environments, more substance use withdrawal and overdose, and growing mental health concerns. Some responses to the pandemic, like physical distancing and financial challenges, are likely to last for months.
Beyond the devastating physical health crises, COVID-19 and its related social distancing measures has wreaked havoc on the economic-, mental-, and social-health of Canadians. The Association for Canadian Studies has been collecting behavioural, economic, and social data from Canadians weekly since March 9 and continues to do so. Our goal is to identify the socioeconomic factors that have had the most effect on the lives of Canadians.
The online delivery of primary school curriculums may work well for subjects like math and science, but not so well for physical education. Now more than ever, it is crucial that we ensure that children continue to benefit from the countless positive mental and physical health outcomes associated with regular involvement in physical activity.
The objective of this research project is to study the perceptions of internationally educated nurses who are taking a language proficiency test, the Canadian English Language Benchmarks Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN) in order to practice nursing in Canada. Since effective communication is critical to quality healthcare, the CELBAN has an important role in evaluating the language skills of internationally educated nurses intending to work in Canada.
In this project, we are looking to find a way to design a low-cost vibration measurement equipment that is portable, sensitive and affordable by medical staff. Therefore, to develop it, three different modules would be designed: sensitive optics, miniaturized optics; low-noise and high-speed electronics, using extremely sensitive electronics components; compact and lightweight housing, by utilizing porous 3D printed materials.
Our research seeks to better understand challenges that translators encounter in translating stories for the diverse sites on the Global Storybooks portal (https://globalstorybooks.net/), and how they resolve these challenges. We will draw on our existing database of translation data to investigate how translators draw on a range of linguistic resources to achieve a satisfactory representation of the target translation. Practically, this data will help us to develop improved guidelines for translators, as well as proofreaders, editors, and coordinators.
The main technical objective for the intern is to contribute in developing a breadboard that utilizes the laser, receiver and scanner technologies and create a potentially very small lidar.
The intern other objectives might also include:
• Investigate the transmitter choices and down?select the best one
• Examine the available detector arrays
• Evaluate whether MEMS mirrors can be used for low?power, high?frame rate applications
Adoption of compact lidar technologies is critical for Optech to remain competitive in the expanding market for lidar solutions.
To develop intercultural competence and further manage potential cultural-related challenges for international students and trainees, the intercultural competence acquisition experiences are explored in this study. The objective of this Mitacs project is to design and analyze users’ experience with six case study scenarios (Scaffolds, Scripts, & Videos) for training in intercultural competence. The scenarios correspond to Bennett's Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity, which promotes a movement from Denial --> Defense --> Minimization --> Acceptance --> Adaptation --> Integration.
