Urban design and transportation investments may have a significant impact on the health and well-being of the people and environments; however, it is often difficult to measure these impacts or predict how long term growth may improve or disrupt a community. This project will begin with a literature review to identify built environment indicators that have been linked to positive population health and holistic well-being outcomes at a community scale.
The objective of this project is to review the program structure, program delivery and client satisfaction for 10 Head Start early childhood education centres operating in Ottawa, ON. Through a mixed-methods approach that combines interviews, surveys, and drawing activities with children we will gain insights on the strengths and challenges experienced by families, children and operators of the Head Start programs.
In addition to food uses, vegetable oils are increasingly a source for renewable biomaterials and biofuels. Recent progress in the development of a biobased economy is focused on introduction and improvement of novel crop plants for non-food applications. The proposed project is part of an international collaborative effort to develop camelina as a new industrial oil platform.
The objectives of this study are: To assess the feasibility of using satellite remote sensing technology to measure trace gases and aerosols over northern Alberta. To study the transport of biomass burning emissions and its impact on air quality over northern Alberta. Methodology: Data from several satellite sensors will be used in this study coupled with AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) ground measurement data, In-service Aircraft for a Global Observing System data (IAGOS), meteorological data and Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) Model.
Power-lines and electric appliances are the main sources of daily human exposure to power-frequency magnetic fields (MF, 60 Hz in North America). In order to protect the public and workers from potential adverse effects, international agencies publish MF exposure guidelines based on the best estimate available regarding the levels producing an acute biological effects in humans, which is called magnetophosphenes (flickering lights perceived eyes closed in the dark while exposed to a strong MF).
My internship focuses on the creation of a weighted scale that ranks different types of environmental disturbances, both natural (i.e. wildfires) and anthropogenic (i.e. seismic activity), by the level of transformation they incur in arctic tundra ecosystems. Currently, there is a lack of a widely used ranking system to help understand which types of environmental disturbances in the arctic are most severe.
This research proposal is in the field of decision making under uncertainty. More specifically, we focus upon improving decision making in adversarial, stochastic and/or partially observable situations. In any situation where there is more than one agent that can impact its current state, or any variable that is outside the control of the agent, we are in the presence of adversarial planning. Failing to recognize the impact of other agents on a situation leads to suboptimal solution.
Workplace incidents usually need to be reported and it is important to ensure that they are resolved in a timely manner. To understand the procedures involved in an emergency response to a workplace incident, we have started investigating the existing practices of the McGill University Safety office by interviewing their personnel. We focused our investigation on chemical spills that occur in the workplace, and found potential areas of improvement in their practices. These potential areas of improvement can be addressed by mobile sensing.
Declarative programming techniques have been used to make programming available to common users through introducing query languages such as SQL and spreadsheet programs such as Excel. The proposed industrial partner, LogicBlox, has developed software that enables highly-complex data analysis through the flexible and familiar form of spreadsheet computing. The main goal of this proposal is to increase and automate adaptivity of LogicBlox platform, and to evaluate proposed methodology through applications in local industry.
