The Coquitlam River Watershed Roundtable is collaboratively developing a watershed management plan for the lower Coquitlam River, using the “Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation” framework. Developed by the Conservation Measures Partnership (a group of international NGOs), this framework is intended to guide the design and implementation of conservation projects using an integrative approach and an adaptive management cycle.
In recent years, with the emergence of online social networks and the growing interest in genetics and biological networks, the research community has been tasked with analyzing knowledge extracted from multirelational datasets. Such analysis, generally known as Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD), is concerned with the computer aided discovery of useful knowledge in databases. An example of the extracted knowledge would be user interest data which improves the accuracy on viewing and predicting market trends, and allows for enriched customization and customer targeting.
Teaching through the arts has often been heralded as an effective way to engage marginalized students. As such, it would seem that an arts-infused approach to learning may promote equity and inclusion in schools. This research project endeavours to engage students as co-researchers to investigate how exactly the arts and creativity allow moments of equity to arise in the classroom.
The intern will be engaged in developing a Lean and Green road map that establishes the current environmental performance of the study facility, identifies opportunities for improvement, and provides a systematic process in order to achieve sustainability goals. By engaging in the development of Current and Future Value Stream maps, applying relevant process management tools, and studying the impacts of soft skills on implementing and maintaining an environmental management system, the intern will identify operational management improvements at the study facility.
My research examines the role of private funding as it increasingly shapes international aid. Despite trillions of dollars spent worldwide on government funded official aid, poverty is anything but a thing of the past. From a recipient perspective, is private aid any better? More Canadians are setting up private family foundations, and globally more private funding is flowing to poorer countries annually. Little is known about the work of private development aid in general and even less is known about the recipient’s experience.
As Lowe’s Companies Incorporated expands their organization across Canada they face tough decisions about where to locate new retail stores. These decisions take place at different scales and require choices to be made about what towns or cities would benefit from a new home improvement center and where within these towns or cities the center should be located. This project extends traditional site-location analysis and develops new approaches and customized tools to assess the best locations for new stores.
Salt marshes are important coastal ecosystems as they provide many services to surrounding areas. However, due to their highly productive nature, they have a long history of being converted into farmland in the Maritimes and continue to be altered for human development. Salt marsh restoration has become popular recently to mitigate the increasing societal costs associated with rising sea level, as well as to increase amount of suitable habitat for wildlife including waterfowl.
This project will involve the monitoring and assessment of newly implemented vegetation management processes at Spectrum Resource Group. The efficacy and consistency of herbicide application in forestry and industrially-related environments will be observed, and notes and recommendations will be made on how new procedures compare to traditional methods.
The automation of wastewater treatment plants can lead to decreased energy usage and improved effluent quality. Current technology focuses on instrumentation and displays so that human operators can make decisions on the operating point of the plant, while relying on simple computer feedback controls to guide the plant. This research program aims at developing intelligent control techniques to make decisions on the operation of the plant in a fully automatic scenario.
