A High Impedance fault (HIF) occurs when an energized primary conductor comes in contact with a semi-insulated object such as tree, structure or equipment, or falls to the ground. HIFs on distribution systems are extremely difficult to detect because they do not generate enough fault current to be detectable by conventional overcurrent relays or fuses. HIFs do not pose imminent danger to power system equipment because they have very little fault current. However, they are a considerable threat to public safety.
Brewing of premium coffee in single-serve capsule is challenging due to many design and machine constraints. Moreover, parameters that affect the brew quality are not fully understood. By collaborating with Mother Parkers Tea and Coffee Inc., this project will systematically evaluate the brewing parameters on the physical and sensorial properties of drip and espresso coffees.
The crew scheduling problem deals with the assignment of crews, both pilots and flight attendants, to a given flight schedule, which first requires flights to be grouped into sequences known as pairings which begin and end at the same base or city. Crew pairings must comply with extensive collective agreement rules. This project deals specifically with open-time flying for flight attendants.
NaquapureTM is a magnetic chitosan nanoparticle which removes heavy metals from wastewater using nanotechnology and a magnetic field to separate the nanoparticles with adsorbed heavy metals from the water. Although this technology has been shown to be effective there is missing information needed for NB-BM to finish product development. For instance, heavy metal removal using this technique has only been previously studied within the laboratory using distilled water.
ALFA Upgrades recently developed a system for buried pipelines, referred to as Displacement Buffering System (DBS), to redistribute the stress and strain concentrations in a pipe and limit the allowable lateral displacement of the pipe in the incidence of large ground movement.
The scope of this project includes performing experimental tests and consequently developing equations that estimate the extent of allowable applied displacement before the onset of pipe buckling while the DBS is in place.
This internship will focus on the chemical modification of a graphene-like material developed by 3M Canada towards membranes for the removal of divalent cations from water and chargestorage materials (supercapacitors). The need for improved purification technologies, specifically those that target the removal of divalent cations, such as calcium and magnesium, which are found in hard water, has never been greater due to the growth of our population and the related industrial and agricultural sectors of the Canadian economy.

As batteries get aged, due to repeated charge and discharge cycles, the health of the battery deteriorates. The poor health of a battery can result in malfunctioning of electronic devices and therefore, it is pertinent to accurately predict the state of health of the battery so that a timely replacement could be performed.
Pratt & Whitney Canada (PWC) seeks to improve the monitoring of its machining process aiming to reduce cost and prevent the tools, workpieces and machine damages during the machining. To achieve this improvement, data mining and advanced artificial intelligence technique which called Logical Analysis of Data (LAD) is used. LAD has ability to identify conditions of tools and of determining which machining conditions can indicate the tool failure or degradation is happening, and which can be considered redundant.
DCZS Intelligent Systems Inc. focuses on providing solutions for industrial automation as well as on facilitating the need of research facilitates and universities. DCZS is currently developing a Box Packaging Automation System (BPAS), targeting the growing needs in packaging/assembling processes in industry. Currently, BPAS is designed based on certain box packaging style and limited size range, and is not versatile for packing boxes with different creasing pattern. To meet seasonal demand from different end customers, a rapid change of the folding tools is required.
Reinforced concrete (RC) structures with steel reinforcement have a limited service life due to corrosion especially for these used in harsh marine and/or aggressive environments or which existed under water ground table. RC vertical structural members as columns and piles transmit axial compressive loads with or without moments are of critical importance for the safety of structures. These members usually exposed to shear and lateral forces.
