Structural and Fluid Controls on Mineralisation at the TV Tower and Kirazli Au-Ag Epithermal Deposits, Biga Peninsula, NW Turkey

The proposed geological research project is collaboration between UBC and industry sponsors to evaluate the nature of metallic resources in NW Turkey. Undeveloped concentrations of gold, silver and copper occur in the study region; these occurrences are being actively explored by the partner organizations. In the interest of the partner companies this research project focuses on an area that completely covers mineral tenure licenses owned by the companies.

Styles and distribution of Cu-Au Deposits south-central Turkey

The research project undertaken by Fabien Rabayrol will consist of studying styles, distributions, ages and metal endowments of gold and copper deposits located along an east-west oriented belt in south-central Turkey from June to October, 2014.

Using Remote Sensing and GIS to Better Understand a Copper Porphyry Prospect (Peru)

Elida is a newly discovered copper porphyry prospect located in Central Peru. The overall copper reserves are unknown and cannot be estimated from field inspection alone. The proposed research by the intern is aimed at helping to solve this ‘puzzle’ by using and developing remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems (GIS) techniques for this problem. RS and GIS will be used by the intern to map and interpret lithological, mineral units and structural features that aid in understanding the movement of copper in this deposit.

Microseismic imaging of hydrocarbon reservoirs treated with hydraulic fracturing

Hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, has become a widely used technique to extract shale gas, tight gas, tight oil, and coal seam gas from low-permeability hydrocarbon reservoirs by injecting fluid and chemicals into wellbores to create small fractures. It has significantly increase the yield of nature gas in recent years. This proposed project takes on the challenge of microseismic imaging for hydrocarbon reservoirs that are treated by hydraulic fracturing.

Effect of Mineralogy on the Application of Sensor-based Sorting Techniques

Comminution, the process of crushing and grinding ore to liberate minerals, is the most energy intensive part of the processing flowsheet and accounts for upwards of 75% of the overall energy consumption of the processing plant. Ideally we would only crush and grind those rocks that contain economically extractable amounts of minerals. MineSense has developed sensors that can detect the level of minerals in rocks and, in particular, can detect very low levels with high accuracy. This proposal is to use MineSense’s sensing technology to pre-concentrate low grade copper ores.

Carbonate Alteration Footprints of Hydrothermal Ore Deposits Year Two

Carbonate hosted hydrothermal ore deposits commonly develop narrow mineral alteration (i.e. visible) haloes, complicating exploration targeting. In contrast, hydrothermal modification of the country rock’s stable isotope composition usually extends far beyond visible alteration. Hence, stable isotope “mapping” is an effective tool to aid exploration for carbonate?hosted deposits. However, widespread utilization of stable isotope data has been hampered by its high cost and long turn-around times.

This postdoctoral study seeks to help Teck understand the practices that support and advance the company's sustainability, its employees' safety, Its collaboration with communities and Its protection of the environment. Through a series of case studies, the researcher will explore how Teck has managed the tension between regulatory compliance and sustainable innovation. The researcher will work with Teck to write case studies that highlight how individuals in the company have contributed to its sustainability, even when they were not required or incentivlzed to do so.

Development of lead-free solder alloys for electronic assembly

The objective of this project is to develop lead free solder alloys with superior mechanical and physical properties. For various reasons (some mentioned above), Sn-based multicomponent alloys with alloying elements, Ag, Cu and/or Bi are likely to be the most promising [2] [8]. For further improvement of Sn-based solder joints, in this work the effects of alloying and/or micro-alloying elements (e.g., Bi, Ag, Cu, Zn, Al, Sb, Ge, Se…) on microstructure, mechanical properties, interfacial reactions, wettability, reliability and melting behavior of Sn-based solders are investigated.

Optimizing the performance of the railway at AMIC by using data mining and advancedartificial intelligence techniques

This research project tackles a condition-based maintenance optimization problem in the railway equipment at ArcelorMittal Infrastructure Canada (AMIC). Logical Analysis of Data (LAD), a data mining technique, will be applied to exploit thousands of data records in order to identify and predict failure causes and degradation behavior of the equipment under study. New knowledge discovery approaches will be developed in order to deal with AMIC’s large scale databases. Mathematical programming and artificial intelligence techniques will be employed to develop these approaches.
