Unlocking big opportunities in small packages: Application of novel nano-scale studies toenhancing mineral exploration and mining efficiency

Recent advancements in TEM sample preparation techniques using the latest generation of dual focused ion and electron beam (FIB-SEM) instrumentation allows for high-resolution examination of textures, elemental composition and structures of minerals at unprecedented resolution. These instruments enable the extraction of FIB-prepared TEM foils at any desired location of the sample (Wirth, 2004, 2009).

Large-scale Inversion of geophysical data

When using geophysical methods to gain insight into the structure of earth, large geophysical data sets are collected. Since the earth is a 3D structure, the data must be interpreted and processed in 3D to be of the most value in the exploration process. This research will develop the capability to invert large gravity, magnetics, and airborne EM datasets accurately and in a reasonable timeframe. This requires the research and development of inversion software, data visualization and QC software, and inversion setup scripts.

Carbonate Alteration Footprints of Hydrothermal Ore Deposits

Carbonate hosted hydrothermal ore deposits commonly develop narrow mineral alteration (i.e. visible) haloes, complicating exploration targeting. In contrast, hydrothermal modification of the country rock’s stable isotope composition usually extends far beyond visible alteration. Hence, stable isotope “mapping” is an effective tool to aid exploration for carbonate hosted deposits. However, widespread utilization of stable isotope data has been hampered by its high cost and long turn-around times.

Host rock stratigraphy and geochronology of high grade gold mineralization in the Neoarchean Central Hearne Domain, Whale Cove, Nunavut, Canada

This project will carry out original research of a prospective lode gold system located on the western shore of Hudson’s Bay. The location is near the hamlet of Whale Cove. The gold mineralization is intrusive-related, very similar to that of the well known deposits of the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake camps of the southern Abitibi. The research specifically addresses the timing of gold mineralization within the context of related host rock alteration. Currently, there is considerable debate over a Neoarchean or Paleoproterozoic age of mineralization.

Metallogeny of Rare Earth Element deposits in Quebec

The one-year project will investigate the geological, geochemical and geophysical properties of three Rare Earth Element (REE) deposits in Québec. Each of the selected deposit is representative of a class of REE mineral deposits. The project will provide new insights in the origin of the three types of REE mineral deposits. This new understanding of the formation of REE mineral deposits will be transferred to the industrial partners and will be used to improve the odds of discovering REE resources in Québec and Canada.

Intelligent Sensing and Automated Sorting of Ore with Rich Sensors

Mining companies have a need to sort rocks based on mineral type. MineSense is researching and developing sorting equipment for this task. Intern will model the problem using probabilistic modelling techniques from the area of artificial intelligence applied to the area of mineral processing using electromagnetic sensors. He will create computer algorithms for automatically interpreting sensor data and intelligently controlling diverters which will identify and divert good rocks into a keep pile and leave the waste in a discard pile.

Mineralogy and geochemistry of selected granitic pegmatites in Uganda

Pegmatites are important sources of several rare elements which are essential for development of modern technologies. The pegmatite deposits in Uganda had been explored and mined until the early 1970’s. At present, they are being re-evaluated and exploration for new deposits is ongoing. Auranda is seeking to establish models for mineral production based on certified, conflict-free production and trading chains.

Géologie et genèse des veines de minéralisations aurifères de la propriété Belleterre de Les Mines JAG Ltée, Abitibi Témiscamingue, Québec

Le présent projet de stage porte sur la propriété Belleterre de Les Mines JAG Ltée qui est située à environ 150km au sud de Rouyn Noranda et 70km à l’est de Ville-Marie, c’est un site aurifère en contexte volcano-sédimentaire, avec zones de déformation et mise en place de veines aurifères et de formation de fer au faciès oxydés. De nombreux intrusifs recoupent les roches volcaniques et certains sont spatialement associés à la minéralisation aurifère.

Détermination des sites de fixation des éléments traces métalliques dans les sédiments de lac

L’approche conventionnelle de l’interprétation des résultats de géochimie d’exploration implique généralement des méthodes statistiques variablement sophistiquées. La faible capacité prédictive de la méthode est notoire. De plus, la littérature demeure sans réponse quant aux sites de fixation préférentiels des métaux dans les sédiments de lac. Dans le but d’éventuellement relier la source aux enrichissements secondaires, IOS Services Géoscientifiques Inc (entreprise partenaire) aimerait déterminer les sites de fixation préférentiels des métaux dans les sédiments de lac.

Analyse structurale de la mine du mont Wright, Fermont, Québec

La mine du mont Wright, située à Fermont au Québec, est le plus important producteur de minerai de fer du Canada. Le gisement se trouve dans des roches ayant été plissée plusieurs fois et possiblement disséquées par des failles tardives. Le projet de maîtrise-recherche proposé, en partenariat entre la compagnie ArcelorMittal et Polytechnique Montréal, vise à réaliser la première analyse structurale du site.
