Depuis 2006, le gouvernement du Québec a réorienté sa politique minière pour promouvoir l’exploration de l’uranium dans le nord québécois. Cependant, les manifestations par des groupes sociaux se sont multipliées résultant ainsi en divers blocages de projets d’exploration de l’uranium (Sept-Îles).

Geochemical and Isotopic Examination of Mineralization of the South Mine Complex, Abitibi Sub-province, Ontario

The Macassa Mine has historically been a major producer of gold in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. Recently, Kirkland Lake Gold Inc. discovered a new South Mine Complex (SMC) which is one of the highest grade gold deposits in Canada. Mineralization in the SMC appears more sulphide rich than in the Main Break of the Macassa Mine, and this project proposes geochemical and isotopic studies on the rocks of the SMC.

L’exploitation d’une mine souterraine est sujette à d’importantes contraintes: l’espace de travail réduit, la distance parfois très élevé au minerai et le besoin de renforcer ou de supporter le massif rocheux. C’est sur ce dernier point que porte la présente recherche. Le choix d’un support de terrain approprié repose avant tout sur la bonne compréhension des contraintes (forces) naturel agissant sur notre excavation et les propriétés de résistance de la roche.

The Raglan Community Social Involvement (CSI) Project: Developing a Comprehensive Model with Inuit Partners

Raglan Mine is developing new, strategic and aligned approaches to its Community Social Involvement (CSI) program. The aim of this program is to partner with others to deliver long lasting value through programs of capacity building, and community social and economic development. This proposed research project involves further developing a comprehensive Community Social Involvement (CSI) model that responds to the needs and desires of both Raglan Mine and the villages of Nunavik.

Reclamation of Mercury-Contaminated Tailings from Small Gold Mining

This Mitacs Acelerate proposal is the first of three-phase project of Adriana’s Goncalves master’s thesis. For this present MITACS proposal, it will be investigated routes to extract gold, mercury and other possible valuable minerals from a representative sample of AGM tailings from Costa Rica. The tailings belong to a small Canadian company, Newlox Gold that is starting an enterprise to reclaim Hg-contaminated tailings in different countries. For this, they need a simple method to extract Hg and value from the tailings in order to payback the reclamation activities.

Planification de la production à court terme à la mine Westwood

Le projet Westwood est une mine d’or situé à proximité de Rouyn-Noranda, en Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Le gisement à exploité est composé de plusieurs veines minces très étalées dans l’espace et à grande profondeur. Ces conditions font en sorte que beaucoup de travaux préparatoirs sont requis afin d’accéder aux zones minéralisées. Étant donné ces conditions particulières et la grandeur de l’exploitation, il est déjà facile de prévoir que la planification à court terme, ou opérationnelle, des activités sera un vrai casse-tête.

Dynamic analysis of tailings dams using advanced constitutive models

Tailings are the residual material produced during the extraction of minerals from mined ores and are usually produced in slurry form. Tailings are retained in impoundments that depending on the type of their structures could be vulnerable in terms of stability under different loading scenarios such as earthquake loading. The consequences of the failure of tailings dams are heavy economic losses, environmental degradation and, in many cases, human loss. These factors justify investment and detailed study on proper analysis and design of tailings dams.

Passive treatment of mine-impacted waters in cold climate: enhancement of metal removal from cold waters by biological-chemical processes in anaerobic packed-bed bioreactors

Increasing mining activities in northern Canada involve significant environmental remediation work in cold-climates. The industry, including Alexco Resource Corp, is currently looking at new passive water treatment technologies, requiring low operation and maintenance cost and providing sustainable solution for the management of mine-impacted waters.

Investigation of fugitive dust emissions from Nepheline Syenite mine tailings near Nephton Ontario

UNIMIN extracts and produces feldspar at two adjacent sites located north of Havelock, Ontario. In recent years, there have been occasional complaints from nearby residents concerning high levels of dust deposition on their properties. The residents believe that the dust originates from the mine site. In response, UNIMIN has invested heavily in several dust control strategies. However, the relative efficacy of these strategies has not been quantified for the given site conditions.

Fugitive lead emissions study for the Trail smelting operation

Teck Metals Ltd. operates one of the world’s largest integrated lead-zinc smelting operations based in Trail, British Columbia. An important part of Teck’s normal day-to-day operations is to carefully track and report on any pollutants generated on site that are released into the environment. The purpose of this internship is to assist their Company in estimating atmospheric emissions of lead particulates from a variety of sources.
