Cannabis sativa is a plant grown used as industrial hemp, for CBD oil, and both medicinal and recreational cannabis (marijuana). Since production has historically been prohibited in Canada and the USA, little is known about insect pests of cannabis, including a species of aphid, the cannabis aphid (Phorodon cannabis). In order to develop effective management techniques, one first needs to generate an understanding of the insect’s basic biology. The proposed research will document the life-history and ecology of cannabis aphids in commercial fields and greenhouses.

Alberta’s Oil and Gas (O&G) sector plays a critical role in Canada meeting its commitment to the Paris Climate Change Agreement. However, few studies published the actual operation data for extraction operations (schemes), especially fuel consumption data to accurately project greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for development and expansion of O&G projects.

Detection of natural gas diversion in residential pipelines is important for public safety. To maintain utilities companies’ reputation and customer satisfaction, such diversion must be detected in a nonintrusive manner, without digging or using endoscope cameras. Thus, it is important to develop techniques for residential gas pipeline diagnosis using an external small device that can detect a diversion if it exists, and determine its location. The goal of this project is to develop non-intrusive diversion detection and localization techniques using ultrasound signals and signal processing.

The research project proposed here takes a radically new approach to on-vehicle electric power generation, with the potential for developing a scalable, flexible, and conceptually very efficient method without the need for complex mechanical off-take. The new method is called the Free-Piston Direct-Drive Linear Generator, a type of Rankine Cycle expansion engine. Excess thermal energy is used to heat a fluid via a heat exchanger, and the energy in this high-pressure and high-temperature fluid is then converted into work via the free-piston expansion engine.

The project will create a research-based strategic plan and roadmap that describes when and how to best introduce NG-911 services in British Columbia. The research needs to consider the unique BC context including review of current legislation, our emergency response structures and practices, current technologies, societal expectations and political norms. The work also needs to consider global trends and developments in emergency communications from industry, government and emergency response agency perspectives and identify the implications in BC.

This project will evaluate the filiform corrosion (FFC) resistance of aluminum frame, aluminum panels and aluminum glazing bead (when used) via powder coating from Starline Windows Ltd. Currently before coating, aluminum substrates are pretreated with cleaning and etch processes, where an alkaline bath made of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) with drinking or reverse osmosis (RO) water is used.

Rangelands store carbon, regulate water, and conserve biodiversity. This research will study the effect of cattle grazing on wet meadow rangelands and their soils. Specifically, this project will measure the effect of changes in plants on soil nematodes. Soil nematodes are important in the cycling of nutrients and carbon and help sustain soil health. We will use surveys of soil nematodes to measure the changing function of soil food webs following grazing.

In Canada, 35% of injuries occur during participation in sports or exercise (Billette, 2011). Sports-related injuries costs the Canadian healthcare system $1.5 billion annually (Parachute, 2015). Injury prevention in sports is of paramount to the athlete, coaches, team management, and health team. Overtraining and fatigue are common causes for injury in sports. Training load is an important factor to optimize athlete performance and minimize risk of injury.

Many women face large hurdles when looking for a bra that is fitting, supporting, and comfortable. This is especially true for women with oversized breasts or who have undergone mastectomy. In additional to emotional distress and poor self-esteem, the lack of fitting and supporting bra may lead to back and chest pain, and negatively impact sleep, sexual activity, and quality of life among others.
