Accelerated and sensitive detection of (bio)chemical analytes through active capture on Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) chips

Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is emerging as a promising technique for rapid, ultrasensitive and highly specific (bio)chemical detection. SERS has been successfully used for the detection of minute quantities of illicit drugs, food contaminants, environmental pollutants, even bacteria and viruses. Unfortunately, like most other surface-based detection methods, SERS also suffers from the same bottleneck, namely the slow transport of the target analyte from the bulk of the sample to the detection surface (also known as sampling).

HI-DSR: Hyperspectral Images enhancement via Deep Sparse Representation model

The current non-destructive and fast method of hyperspectral imaging technology are used for different application from remote sensing to medical imaging and food processing. Due to the nature of acquired data which are massive as well as physical consideration depend on the type of application, the careful, fast and accurate data analysis is mandatory to accelerate the usage of HSI technology. To cope with the type of HSI data in which the sparsity assumption is applicable, this project aims to address the HSI data representation though the sparse problem under deep learning approach.

Effect of carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals on the properties of water-based latex coatings

This project proposes the use of carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) - developed and manufactured by Anomera Inc. from Canadian forest - as a nanosized ingredient to tailor a set of properties in composites made from water-based latexes used for coating applications such as sealants and paints. Incorporation of the CNCs will enhance the performance of the coating and prolong its lifetime. Due to its unique properties, CNC can significantly enhance the durability of coatings, making them more resistant to abrasion, scratches and impact, thereby extending their useful lifetime.

Towards joint inversion of seismic and muon tomography data for reservoir monitoring

Hydrocarbon production methods extract mass from the subsurface and consequently change the density distribution. Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) uses steam to enhance the heavy oil in the subsurface which mobilizes it and allows it to be pumped to the surface. Today, we do not know very accurately, where oil is produced and where steam is moving in the subsurface. This leads to waste of steam and inefficient production.

This study will look at changes in the heart rate variability and electroencephalogram (EEG) signals in individuals receiving gut supplementation for depression. This is to see if the vagus nerve (a major nerve connecting your brain and gut) is affected by this therapeutic, and how that results in changes in your brain. This work will provide insight into the mechanism of action for these supplements and contribute to a great understanding of major depressive disorder and possible avenues for advancement in the realm of gut microbiome targeting MDD treatments.

Sources and sinks for potentially hazardous elements in mine waste

Mining is important to the Canadian economy but also generates large quantities of waste rock. Water percolating through some waste rock piles dissolves metals that can become hazardous to ecosystems. Laboratory tests are used to simulate this process. The intern will examine a suite of samples from a multi-year laboratory test to identify the source minerals and new minerals (sinks) that may have formed during the experiment. She will also work with the partner to determine the mineral reactions that occurred during the tests.

The Impact of Sustained Time in Human Care on the Migratory Behaviour of the Endangered Loggerhead Shrike

Our research will assess the degree to which variation in migratory behavior in Loggerhead Shrike is altered due to sustained periods of captivity. Information will be obtained from a captive population of Loggerhead Shrike. Behaviour of captive birds will be recorded on video cameras and analyzed to determine the level of migratoriness displayed by differently aged birds. The pedigree (i.e. relatedness) of each bird will be used for analyses of heritability of migratory behaviour.

A newly patented vacuo dry-glycation process promises much higher efficacy than the conjugation chemistry used currently, paving the way towards a much lower dosage cost. and its vaccine is a kind of polysaccharide-protein conjugate system.

This research internship contributes to the project by developing a comprehensive understanding of what supports social cohesion in these neighbourhoods, and what hinders it. In addition, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused new problems for neighbourhoods, making it harder for people to come together as a community.

Currently patients need to use their own devices to measure their biometric data and the doctors have to look up previous doctors’ notes to provide an informed advice.
