Hydraulic fracturing technology is one of the most used and efficient methods of oil reservoir stimulation. A way to improve this technology is the consequent pumping of several different fluids containing different concentrations of different proppants (solid spherical particles). This project with Schlumberger, one of the largest international companies in oilfield services, aims at developing a mathematical model describing this technology. The numerical model will predict the fluids’ and proppants’ location is reduced to formulating and solving numerically a different equation.
A University of Calgary intern is undertaking an internship with IntelliView Technologies, a provider of software and hardware solutions to incorporate real time behaviour analysis into camera systems. More specifically, the internship will look at Automatic System Detection (ASD) which is used to detect special symbols from an image or series of images taken by a camera. The ASD systems can be implemented in airports to automatically track the cargo packages in air shipment departments.
Cognitive Mapping or CM - sometimes called Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping- is a process by which an individual, group of individual, or groups of individuals can identify a central topic and over prolonged discussion, identify the various factors which relate to that topic. CM has been recently applied to explore issues in First Nations communities by researchers at the University of Ottawa to, for example, explore factors associated with diabetes (diet, lifestyle, education, etc) and to weigh these various factors associated with the central theme as strongly or weakly, positively or negatively.
This internship project with Deep Compression Inc. aims to produce a prototype demonstrating a new technique for asymmetric lossless data compression. Unlike conventional compression techniques, this prototype will allow representational information to be recovered using an algorithmic recovery procedure, algorithmic self-organizing structure (ASOS).

Feedlot Health Management Services is a comprehensive beef industry consultancy, providing veterinary services, herd health programs and computerized health-recording systems and other informational tools to producers. Fat yield, lean yield, meat tenderness, carcass marbling and carcass grading are some characteristics of cattle that are measures of beef quality. Thus, the goal of this project is to determine how these characteristics and the genetic makeup of the cattle are correlated with one another.
The intern will study possible enhancements to insolvency prediction models of the partner company. Her study will extend the previous models by combining macroeconomic market information and firm-specific information to identify firms facing possible financial trouble. The results of the study will provide helpful information for the company’s surveillance efforts to prevent insolvency or reduce the costs of insolvency for PACICC.
Direct Energy is a leading retailer of energy and energy solutions for both residential and business customers in North America. In partnership with the company, the intern will work on energy data mining and analyses using gas and power data. The intern’s analyses will include analysis of natural gas storage and its impact (if any) on price momentum, the relationship between power and gas (heat-rate analysis) and some fundamental analysis such as relationships between HDD, storage gas, basis and fixed prices.
Complex Systems focuses on developing the next generation of sensor networks. Detection and location of microwave emitter/reflector using sensor networks have attracted much attention in the sensor and communication communities. Thus, the intern’s research project addresses some important issues in system design for target detection and localization. Detection and localization schemes will be developed and exploited in the designed sensor network. Testing will also be carried out to validate the proposed sensor network for wireless detection and localization.
Geo-X Processing, Divestco Inc., a Canadian seismic processing contractor, is seeking to enter a new segment of the market, the so-called “depth imaging” market, by Q3 2007. The company is currently developing a comprehensive suite of depth imaging algorithms aimed at competing in the above market, but currently lacks a certain sophisticated tool. Such a tool has been recently developed at the University of Calgary, called the “FOCI algorithm”.
