Accelerating Learning Process for Medical Image Segmentation using Opposition-based Learning

In this project we will translate and test artificial intelligence techniques to segment medical images with the capability to perform more accurately than conventional methods. The technique is expected to largely eliminate tedious manual delineation of suspicious objects in medical images or, at least, significantly reduce the intensity and frequency of manual modifications traditionally preformed by radiologists.

Where the highway ends: a study of accessibility in the Pearl River Delta region, China

The project focuses on the relationship between economic development and transportation accessibility in extended metropolitan regions. A GIS-based analysis will examine this relationship for the Pearl River Delta (PRD), which is a large and expanding urban region in southern China. The intern will develop technique to measure how the location and geometry of highway systems affect urban and industrial growth and how accessibility to transportation systems informs the proximity and time/ distance measure of industrial firms.

Recovery of Base Metals from Coverter Slags

The project to be undertaken will aid in the replacement of a conventional practice of pyrometallurgical treatment of a semi-waste product (converter slag) Converter slags contain up to ~3% of No, Co and CU, and are generated in large quantities making it uneconomical to leave the metals unrecovered. The conventional technology for metal recovery results in technological and environmental complications, such as recycling of impurities as well as uncontrollable release of fugitive SO2 into the atmosphere.

Quantitative Investigation of Wood-Based Biomass in Support of a CHP Plant for the Ontario East Wood Centre & Eco-Industrial Park

This research will support the development of the Eco-Industrial Park and Ontario East Wood Centre (EOWC), which is under development in the Township of Edwardsburgh/Cardinal. The EOWC is an innovative approach to revitalizing the regional economy by adding value to the under-utilized renewable forest resource in the area. A critical gap in information required by potential investors will be addressed. Sources and quantities of available forest-based biomass within a 120 kilometer radius around the EOWC will be assessed.

Enhanced Child Safety in Automobiles- Knowledge & Technology Transfer

This project was in partnership with AUTO21. The focus of the research project is to raise awareness and knowledge of the public about the importance of booster seats for children aged 4-9. The specific objective of the internship is to evaluate the impact of Canadian booster seat legislation on motor vehicle occupant fatalities and injuries, especially spinal cord injuries, amongst children aged 4-9.

Analysing the Information Seeking, Use and Sharing Practices of Newcomers to Canada

The proposed study explores the information practices of new immigrants in large, urban cities in Canada with respect to their choices regarding mobile phone services. The research goals are to (1) assess how mobile phones fit within the information practices of newcomers (2) understand when and where newcomers get information about mobile phone services in Canada, and(3) identify patterns of use and perceptions of service about mobile technologies among newcomers.

Modeling, Simulation and Design Optimization of an Ultra High Frequency Panel Antenna

The proliferation of wireless devices has demanded improvements of wireless communication technology. Panel antennas are a type of reflector antenna in which an array of driven elements is mounted in front of a flat, metallic reflector. When designing, optimizing or perhaps just selecting a commercially available antenna, electromagnetic characteristics are generally the most used parameters to judge the efficiency and adequacy of an antenna.

Rescue of Endoplasmic Reticulum Associated Degradation of F508CFTR Protein in Cystic Fibrosis by Stop Transfer Sequence Containing Verotoxin

The intern will generate DNA sequences to make modified verotoxin proteins that will effectively disrupt the breakdown of a mutant protein (the CFTR protein) that is found in patients with cystic fibrosis. The mutant CFTR protein has normal function but is degraded in cystic fibrosis individuals because of the mutation. The modified verotoxin will reduce the breakdown of the CFTR protein, and hence increase expression of the mutant CFTR protein and subsequent restoration of normal function of cells expressing CFTR protein.

On-line Tool for Developing Municipal Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategies

Many Canadian municipalities have targets for reducing their greenhouse (GHG emissions, but most are struggling to develop and implement strategies for substantially reducing GHGs. This research project develops an on-line, interactive software tool that municipalities can use to develop GHG reduction strategies.
