Dignitas International is a Toronto-based humanitarian organization, which works with the Malawian Ministry of Health to develop and disseminate a healthcare delivery model that increases access to essential HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care, and support at the community-level. In 2004, Dignitas established its pilot project in Zomba, the fifth largest district in Malawi with the country's second highest adult HIV infection prevalence at 17.8%.
Under the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care's Physician IT Program, Ontario's physicians have been funded for an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system within their practice. OntarioMD, a subsidiary of the Ontario Medical Association, was established to support all physician adoption of health information technology (HIT).
The intern will use screening methods to define which gene which are altered in the Jurkat human T cell line following incubation with the Verotoxin B subunit as a means to define the potential mechanism by which this treatment protects these cells from HIV1 infection in vitro. LISI Therapeutics will benefit by increasing their license portfolio to include the rights of Verotoxin B subunit as a potential clinical treatment for HIV/AIDS.
By considering privacy, data storage, data transfer and accessibility issues, the project aims to develop policies that both protect the client and the organization. The larger aim is to demonstrate that health information technologies can be successfully implemented to support nurses in the care planning process. The research will inform the long term goal of future implementation in settings across the healthcare sector and the real-time execution of an electronic health record.
Nurses injure their backs at alarming rates. Experts now agree that most injuries are not due to a single lifting activity where the load exceeds the spine's ability to support it, as has been the conventional view. Instead, it is likely that most back Injuries are the result of the total loading (cumulative load) the spine is exposed to over the day. Unfortunately, it is difficult to estimate cumulative loading of the spine using conventional methods. The applicant proposes a new method for estimating cumulative loading which involves measuring changes in a nurse's height.
This project is in partnership with AllerGen. Indoor moulds are recognized as important contributors to respiratory illnesses such as allergy and asthma. However, the detection of mould in houses may be problematic, particularly when mould is concealed within wall cavities. Despite that these sources of mould are hidden, they still contribute spores into the room air, presenting a recognized health threat.
The overall aim of this internship is to conduct a thorough search of the Ontario‐based mental health and addictions organizations, agencies and community‐based organizations and identify the initiatives by the Ministries to enable implementation of CareNotes‐ a web‐based electronic patient record (EPR) solution. Understanding the technology and workflow assessment where such solutions need to be incorporated will enable The Halifax Group to position the CareNotes solution to address the needs of maintaining life‐long health information of mental health patients.
In this project we will translate and test artificial intelligence techniques to segment medical images with the capability to perform more accurately than conventional methods. The technique is expected to largely eliminate tedious manual delineation of suspicious objects in medical images or, at least, significantly reduce the intensity and frequency of manual modifications traditionally preformed by radiologists.
The project focuses on the relationship between economic development and transportation accessibility in extended metropolitan regions. A GIS-based analysis will examine this relationship for the Pearl River Delta (PRD), which is a large and expanding urban region in southern China. The intern will develop technique to measure how the location and geometry of highway systems affect urban and industrial growth and how accessibility to transportation systems informs the proximity and time/ distance measure of industrial firms.
The project to be undertaken will aid in the replacement of a conventional practice of pyrometallurgical treatment of a semi-waste product (converter slag) Converter slags contain up to ~3% of No, Co and CU, and are generated in large quantities making it uneconomical to leave the metals unrecovered. The conventional technology for metal recovery results in technological and environmental complications, such as recycling of impurities as well as uncontrollable release of fugitive SO2 into the atmosphere.
