This project is in partnership with AUTO21. This proposal is to help perform knowledge and technology transfer activities to implement the proposed techniques for vehicular communications on real systems and demonstrate their capabilities to our industrial partner. The techniques regard first a scalable solution for authentication and authorization of communicating entities in vehicular networks to secure exchanges of information while preserving the privacy of parties; and second an interference management medium access control for safety message transmission in vehicular networks.
In a Healthcare setting, multiple potential interactions, directions and decisions significantly affect the patientfs path throughout the system. It is difficult to determine which changes would be beneficial to patient flow and care prior to making the decision. A decision support tool will allow the decision maker to assess the consequences and effects of a number of possible choices, before implementation. This will allow creating more informed decisions, where the effects are known and understood ahead of time.
Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) is a chemical found naturally in the brain that plays a key role in the stress response. CRF is also known to be involved in anxiety and mood disorders, as well as various aspects of drug dependence, including long-term relapse to drug use. Pathological symptoms in the form of mood disorders and substance abuse occur, at least in part, as a result of aberrant activity within CRF systems. From this perspective, CRF is a logical target for drug development in the treatment of these disorders.
The interns will spend time in the company lab to build and test proprietary electronic chemical detectors. These will be tested and undergo quality control measures in Universal NanoSensor Technologies’ lab. Once deemed robust, these detectors will then be used concurrently with present art detectors in a real-world, cutting‐edge, applications‐driven setting so that direct comparison can be made. The interns, under the guidance of the supervisor and other students involved in the lab, will perform head‐to‐head tests using both these detectors in place.
For this project, the mathematical finance intern will assist in the development and implementation of a new Economic Capital system, a method used by society to produce and distribute goods and services. The internship will also look into the development and implementation of appropriate risk management policies and procedures. The intern will manage the performance of operational tasks related to asset and liability compliance reporting and credit reporting as well as oversee the performance of credit and financial assessments of treasury credit counterparties.
Credit valuation adjustment (CVA) is becoming an integral part of pricing any over-the-counter (OTC) trading portfolio, especially in the light of current market conditions. CVA is the difference between the portfolio values with and without accounting for the possibility of default of trading counterparties. BMO Capital Markets has launched a project to create a front office CVA system that will allow traders to analyze and hedge their credit exposure using adequate and appropriately calibrated models.
The new trend in electric power systems is to incorporate distributed energy resource (DER) units into the main grid. Such DER units can form a microgrid if they are in close proximity of each other and are connected to the main grid through a single point of common coupling (PCC). If for any reason the microgrid becomes separated from the main grid, for example in a case of a fault occurrence, the new paradigm of power systems (Smart Grid) necessitates that the microgrid continues to operate in this islanded mode.
A strategic opportunity exists to integrate, strengthen and reform land use, transportation and municipal energy planning policies to address climate change goals in Ontario. The kinds of policies that reduce urban sprawl go hand in hand with climate policy, and vice versa. The project with the Pembina Institute, an organization committed to sustainable energy solutions, will analyze existing government initiatives and relevant government policies to determine opportunities for Green House Gas (GHG) reductions through policy modifications or additions.
The internship’s broad objective is to improve the underlying mechanisms of Quillsoft’s flagship writing tool, WordQ, which is developed at Bloorview Kids Rehab, Canada’s largest children’s rehabilitation teaching hospital. WordQ software helps individuals to write by suggesting words and phrases based on what a user has already written. This is accomplished by a combination of statistics and grammar, which will be the focus of the intern’s activities. Currently, WordQ uses a short context window that precedes the current word to make its predictions.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an important procedure in reproductive technology to help couples with infertility problems. Presently, the ICSI procedure suffers from a long learning curve, low success rates and reproducibility, and inconsistency among technicians. In this project, a novel automated microinjection system for human ICSI will be developed.
