Coupled human-salmon-bear systems of coastal British Columbia

The Raincoast Conservation Foundation pursues conservation initiatives in coastal British Columbia through science, outreach, and sustainable economies, such as ecotourism or community-driven fisheries management informed by local knowledge and ecology. The success of wildlife viewing ecotourism greatly depends on knowing areas and time periods predictably used by target species. The goal of the proposed research is to inform initiatives of Raincoast and its ecotourism partners (e.g. Spirit Bear Lodge, Wuikinuxv First Nation, Nimmo Bay Resort) by research on commercially-valuable wildlife.

Chopping Away at Hunger: Social Gradients of Food Insecurity in Vancouver, BC

Urban centres such as Vancouver are sites of socio-economic inequality, which creates differential levels of food security. The primary objective of my research is to map social gradients of food insecurity in Metro Vancouver. In the process of creating this map, I will develop a set of food security indicators and generate baseline scores for Metro Vancouver neighbourhoods. Based on my findings, I will formulate recommendations for improving data availability, as well as for strategically developing food assets for locations in need.

Environmental Influences on Affordances for Risky Play in ECEC Institutions

This research project aims to develop a greater understanding of environmental factors that contribute to affordances in risky play for children in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) institutions in Levanger, Norway. The study will analyse observational data collected such as, semi-structured interviews with children and practitioners, video observations and field memos. All data will be analyzed for typology of risky play, degree of risk, and environemnetal components that afford risks in children’s play (Gibson, 1979; Little & Wyver, 2010; Sandseter, 2007).

Towards a Universal Polymer Crosslinker

A crosslink is a chemical bond that links one polymer chain to another. Adding crosslinks can enhance the strength of polymers, and can improve performance at high temperatures. In this collaboration between Epic Ventures Inc and the Wulff Research Group at the University of Victoria, we are inventing a new family of chemical crosslinkers that will literally work with any polymer that contains carbon–hydrogen bonds.

Using Marine Technology to Develop a Gulf Islands Marine Biology Education and Outreach Program

With the increase of human impacts on the ocean, more effective and engaging environmental education is needed to inspire action. The Galiano Conservation Association (GCA) aims to educate the public about marine conservation issues around Galiano island. The intern will help GCA to understand how to improve their marine education program, using underwater video technology to bring an audience to otherwise inaccessible environments. Once new programs are implemented, a plan for testing the efficacy of new programs will be developed.

Landscapes of Injustice, Curatorial Postdoctoral Fellowship

Amaratunga Railton’s proposed project is to take a leading role in curating the capstone public output of Landscapes of Injustice (LOI). LOI is a 7-year, intersectoral community-engaged research project exploring the dispossession of Japanese Canadians during the 1940s. LOI illustrates (1) the violation of human and civil rights at a time of perceived insecurity; (2) measures taken in the name of national defence; (3) the enduring harm of mass displacement, and loss of home and property; (4) human resilience.

Context-Aware Advertising Language Modeling with Deep Learning for Internet Ads

Digital advertising is a rapidly growing industry, commonly seen on Facebook and Google. However, most people who start promoting their business with Internet Ads are not professional and experienced marketers. They need help to design and launch ads campaign, especially on writing ads copies. Meanwhile, people have started to embrace AI technologies in the industry more than ever before. In this project, I propose to bring the state-of-the-art AI technology into the partner company’s products. I will train deep learning neural networks with Tensorflow to learn and write ads copies.

Evaluating the impacts of landscape development on carnivore activity patterns and species interactions

Understanding the impacts of human-driven disturbance on carnivore communities is an important step for prioritizing conservation decisions and managing land-use policies. Disturbances such as landscape development may influence how species structure their activity periods over the 24-hour cycle and potentially compromise the capacity for competitors to avoid costly encounters with each other. Few studies to date have investigated how landscape disturbance impacts species’ behaviour and interactions across time, and the potential ramifications on community-level biodiversity and structure.

Characterization of back-illuminated complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor detector arrays for CASTOR

We seek to test the behaviour of candidate detectors for the proposed CASTOR space telescope. We are focused on the response to dim images, the behaviour when resetting portions of an image during exposure, and the behaviour when using multiple reads throughout an exposure to reduce the effect of random noise generated when reading the detector. We will do this by performing these readouts on the detectors when they are illuminated by a known light source under laboratory conditions in a cold vacuum chamber.

Energy and Seismic Retrofit of Buildings

In Canada, being one of the coldest countries in the world, buildings consume about 40% of national energy demand and in the western part of the country, particularly on Vancouver Island, many buildings do not meet current seismic code requirements. Hence, simultaneous building energy and seismic retrofit options can produce significant savings for building occupants and also help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, earthquake damage potential and associated environmental impacts.
