The Designed Vernacular- The Universal Indigenous-Positing vernacular architecture in a global world

Concerns about the regimenting and homogenizing effect of technological advancement on the distinctness of place and culture have triggered conversations on regionalism and identity in architecture leading to renewed interest in and deliberation on vernacular building traditions.

Digital Tools and Techniques to Enable Mass Customization of Prefabricated Housing Year Two

The intended research aims at bringing the design and production process of the industry partner, BONE STRUCTURE into a new level of customization, that involves effective homebuyers participation in the design of their homes, using cutting-edge computatioanl design techniques. The customization process is initiated with a layout design; roomblocks modifications, till selection of appliances and systems, via web- based, interactive interface that would engage homebuyers in a designer-customer like dialogue.

Exposing the Invisible – Designing with the Uncertainty of Wind

The objective of this project is to connect architects and wind engineers early on within a project so that affects associated with wind such as pedestrian comfort and building strength may be maintained from the start of a project. Rather than making post-construction modifications to a building through the costly use of screens, covers or even redesign, favorable wind conditions could be achieved through the collaboration between architects and wind engineers during the initial stages of design.

Digital Tools and Techniques to Enable Mass Customization of Prefabricated Housing

Mass customization is a multifaceted process that involves managing various aspects, such as managerial, and technical. Housing, unlike other products, requires a considered response to social and cultural issues when gathering clients’ preferences. There have been valuable contributions to the process of mass customization of housing in diverse domains.

Modernization of Chinese Earth-Sheltered Dwellings

The proposed research project will be to visit survey and document post and modern cave dwellings, live in the villages, getting to know the local villagers and craftsmen, and engage in cross-cultural and interdisciplinary research. Through method of record, from measured drawings to statistical analysis, full scale details to test of structural performance or climate regulations, which we can apply to cave dwelling as a preparation for their application to more complex architecture.

Effect of solar photovoltaics (PV) on green roof vegetation and performance

Green roofs contribute to numerous social, economic, and environmental benefits and as components of green infrastructure planning are becoming increasingly commonplace. Less is known though about how green roofs perform when integrated with other sustainable designs, such as photovoltaic (PV) panels that share the roof space, which could experience higher energy efficiency through increased cooling by the green roof vegetation. Vegetation cools green roofs through a process called evapotranspiration, a component of photosynthesis, which increases with exposure to sunlight.
