The rise of Big Data, social networking, and mobile interactions coupled with an accelerating increase in the amount of structured and unstructured information enabled by cloud based technologies is forcing organizations to focus on information that is most relevant, value-generating, and risk-related. Problems arise when we make decisions based on good enough metrics (e.g. means) instead of proper statistical methods (e.g. T-tests, ANOVA). The issue is that everyday business workers need to understand statistics in a cloud centered world.
Energy Disaggregation is to find the energy consumption of individual appliances from only a single measure of household electricity consumption. Accurate energy disaggregation helps identify major energy guzzlers in the house and motivates users to take proper actions for energy saving. To pursue aneasy-to-use and scalable solution to energy disaggregation for contemporary large-scale appliances, we have proposed a solution of semi-intrusive appliance load monitoring (SfALM).
The goal of the project is to help the industrial partner with evaluating, customizing and adopting advanced software engineering and quality assurance methods based on the notion of software product line (SPL) engineering practices. The software system considered in this project is an electronic medical record (EMR) system that is used in hundreds of clinics in Canada (OSCAR). EMRs are safety-critical as well as security-sensitive. Therefore, it is important to establish systematic and mature quality assurance practices.

Many users need to draw information from hundreds of completely autonomous resources, such as online biomedical databases, clinical databases and specialized analytical Web services. IPSNP Computing Inc. is developing a technology based on Semantic Web services that facilitates ad hoc self-service querying of such distributed resources by non-technical users, such as biologists or clinical researchers. Products include a query engine HYDRA and a query composition GUI, intended initially for biomedical applications, such as drug discovery and Clinical Intelligence.
New developments in optical networks management is allowing to control network with a higher degree of abstraction. Software defined networks aim at providing simple mechanisms to manage open interface between devices and equipment within the network and the software controlling them. Furthermore, managing networks using software allows adapting them to evolving traffic patterns and applications, dedicating bandwidth where it is needed.
Telecom operators are demanding more flexible, scalable and energy efficient products. As a system integrator managing networks for operators, Ericsson realize that the benefits of using modern and improved systems is becoming even more critical, as they offer a reduced Operational and Capital Expenditure (i.e. OPEX and CAPEX) of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems. The goal of this project is to develop a mechanism to prevent congestion in the network, prevent packets from being dropped and to guarantee delivery of packets between collaborating end-hosts.
This project will enable customers to be able to track their scheduled jobs with technicians on their mobile devices. The work will see the development of an application that can facilitate customers to view the locations of technicians on a map and scheduled appointments with them. The technicians can set their status as “available” and “not available” which can aid the customer to schedule appointment only with available technicians. There are lots of research components in this work from both technical and non-technical perspectives.
