L’industrie de la construction est un secteur majeur au Québec puisqu’elle représente à elle seule 13% du PIB et 1 emploi sur 20. Cependant, la réglementation qui l’encadre pose quelques difficultés. Cette réglementation date de 1968 et il s’agit de la Loi sur les relations du travail, la formation professionnelle et la gestion de la main-d’oeuvre dans l’industrie de la construction, ou loi R-20. La problématique soulevée dans cette étude est la partie de cette loi relative à la formation obligatoire pour les vingt-cinq métiers du bâtiment.

Recent years have witnessed a boom in the construction of modern high-rise buildings in megacities around the world. It is important to design a high-rise building that can effectively withstand both wind and earthquake loads. Nonetheless, in current practice, the design of high-rise buildings for wind and earthquakes is done independently. Hence, there is an urgent need to develop a set of integrated design guidelines for both wind and earthquake loads.

Composting anaerobic digestate

The interest in organic waste treatment has increased a lot in the recent years. Among the treatment technologies, anaerobic digestion (AD) has gained a significant role in municipal solid waste management due to its energy recovery benefits. Digestate is the solid material produced from the biodegradation of organic waste during anaerobic digestion process. Management of a high volume of digestate is one of the challenges in AD technology. The digestate can be mixed with the organic waste and then applied to the composting process.

Methanobiofiltration (MBF) is a new technology for the treatment of waste methane gas using a biological process, thus contributing to the reduction of the environmental impacts of current energy technologies. The primary objective of this project is to establish the seismic performance factors for elevated liquid tanks. In addition, the nonlinear dynamic response behaviour of supporting towers in elevated liquid tanks when subjected to extreme dynamic loads will be investigated. A numerical approach which employs finite element technique as well as a probabilistic collapse analysis method is proposed.

Characterization, antibacterial mechanism and improvement of Kisolite Clay

Kisolite Clay, a unique BC clay, has been found to have healing properties for skin irritation and internal ailments. However, this clay is not well understood in terms of its chemical and physical properties and the mechanism underlying its antibacterial properties. During preliminary tests it was found that the pH and oxidation state of the Kisolite clay changed over time. The impact of these changes on antibacterial properties will be investigated.

Evaluation of Application of Shredded Tiresas Insulation Layers for Highways in Alberta

Stockpiles of scrap tire grow larger every day in Alberta due to heavy industry. Safe and healthy disposal of scrap tires requires costly municipal landfill space. Using tire derived aggregates (TDA) for construction applications such as road embankment and insulation layers is of great attention and interest to Alberta’s government. Frost penetration beneath the pavement causing frost heave in winter followed by spring thaw weakening is one of the factors that affect the base layer thickness in cold climates.

Smart Water Distribution Systems to Conserve Energy and Water

Water Innovation Project (administered through the Ministry of the Environment) involving the Canadian Urban Institute and the University’s Cities Centre wherein these metrics were successfully applied to the City of Toronto’s water supply system and had the effect of changing the way these systems are thought about; that is, through the lens of energy flows.
