An efficient and secure data science platform for COVID-19 cases and other related health data

The COVID-19 crisis has developed, and not unjustifiably, a strong data aspect, requiring to handle, store and exchange large amounts of data in an efficient and secure way, not only among hospitals and clinics, but also between government services globally. In this project, we propose the development of an extendible prototype of a big data platform for COVID-19 data. We focus on the scalability and the security of this platform, by employing novel technologies, such as NoSQL databases, MapReduce analytics and Blockchain.

Identifying and Prioritizing Difficult Systemic Sclerosis Health Care Decisions to Inform the Development of Patient Decision Aids

When faced with complicated treatment decisions, patients and health care providers can use patient decision aids to gain information about options and potential outcomes. Treatment for rare autoimmune diseases like systemic sclerosis can be overwhelming as there may be more than one treatment option, without one being clearly better than another.

Santé mentale globale: Accroître la capacité d'intégrer la santé mentale dans les soins primaires en Tunisie

En Tunisie, la majorité des personnes vivant avec des maladies mentales ne reçoivent pas de traitement. Le Ministère de la santé tunisien et le bureau de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) à Tunis aimeraient offrir la formation mhGAP (développé par l'OMS) à des médecins généralistes afin d'accroître leurs compétences en santé mentale et créer des services de proximité. Une étude randomisée en grappe sera menée pour évaluer l'efficacité de la formation implantée. Cent médecins généralistes travaillant dans quatre délégations seront recrutés.

Comme la plupart des pays en transition, la Tunisie est un pays qui est confronté à une restructuration constante de son système de santé pour faire face à différents défis. Dans la cadre de la nouvelle restructuration de son système, le gouvernement tunisien a décidé de mettre à l'échelle des projets les plus prometteurs et efficaces au niveau local. Bien que les projets locaux aient un impact positif sur la santé des populations cibles, leur déploiement à plus grande échelle présentent encore d’importantes difficultés.

Health risks of agricultural intensification in Vietnam

During the last couple decades, agricultural practices have increased in intensity to meet the growing needs of economic growth and population growth in Vietnam. Increased livestock production, management of human and animal waste, hormone and antibiotic residues from humans and livestock present human and environmental health concerns. The risks of agricultural intensification to human health are not well studied and understood in Vietnam. In this study, I will explore the risks of agricultural intensification to human health through a systematic review of the literature.

Economic Assessment of a Predictive Technology for the Early Detection of Oral Cancer

Health economic evaluation provides information about the value for money of new healthcare technologies, and is increasingly used to guide the allocation of scarce resources based on maximizing health gain. The molecular diagnostics company, PDI, has developed a technology to improve the identification of patients at high risk for oral cancers for early intervention, and distinguish abnormal cell growth that will not become malignant, compared to the current gold standard alone.

Disaster Management and Informal Settlements in India

The most recent flood in Ahmedabad, India occurred in September 2013, when 50,000 people were displaced from low lying areas of the state. The World Bank report warns that the poor living in informal settlements, such as coastal slums in India, are the most likely to be killed or harmed by extreme weather linked to climate change. The purpose of this research is to understand the historical developments of post-disaster guidelines and disaster preparedness plans in urban slums of India.

Structural and geochemical controls of mineralization of the Efemςukuru, low-intermediate sulphidation deposit, western Turkey

The MDRU of UBC proposes to conduct a study at the Efemςukuru gold deposit, located 30 km southwest of Izmir, Turkey. Efemςukuru is an example of an ore deposit formed from convecting hot, metal-bearing fluids in an area with abundant faults. One of the key objectives of this project is to identify how the geometry of the faults in the surrounding area controlled the metal-bearing fluids responsible for gold mineralization.
