Integrating artificial intelligence with computer simulation to support decision-making in the context of Industry 4.0

Industry 4.0 is a central strategy to strengthen the competitiveness of the manufacturing sector over the next
years. Nevertheless, there is a lack of common understanding of the Industry 4.0 concept and tools to help
companies’ transformation to Industry 4.0, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which still
not adhering or underexploiting Industry 4.0 principles and technologies. To address these research gaps, this
study will explore the integration of simulation modeling with artificial intelligence techniques to develop tools to
support decision-making in Industry 4.0 context. For this, a multi-method design science research approach will
be adopted, including proof-of-concept cases developed in collaboration with the partner organization. Thus, this
project will help create a synergy between industry and academy, complement the industrial partner technical
expertise, and expand in-house capacity and portfolio of methodological tools to support SMEs’ digital
transformation.
