A Simulation Tool for Power Quality of Electric Submersible Pumps (ESPPQST)
This Mitacs project aims to investigate effects of variable frequency drives (VFDs) to Electric Submersible Pumps (ESP) and their runtimes. The research work is motivated by the need for oil and gas industry stakeholders to have a computer simulation tool that will help to better understand different topologies of variable frequency drives are impacting the power quality of ESP systems, supplied through a power distribution cable.
Two ESP systems will be investigated in the project. The ESP system 1 is with low-voltage VFD and step-up transformer and the ESP system 2 is with a medium-voltage VFD based multilevel Cascaded H-bridge inverter without a step-up transformer. Both systems will be analyzed in identical operating conditions. An evaluation of harmonics of VFD-ESP systems will be carry out and correlated with ESPs premature failures.
