Understanding the migration and employment experiences of Chinese rural migrant women factory workers – The role of the household registration system, workplace and household

This proposed research project is for my doctoral thesis. The research focuses on the migration and employment experiences of Chinese rural migrant women factory workers. It will provide an in-depth analysis of factors that women themselves have thought relevant to their migration and employment status and experiences. The research will examine the role of three institutions, including the hukou (the household registration) system, the workplace, and the household, with a gender focus, in affecting rural women’s migration and employment experiences.

The Rise of Fishes: A Comprehensive Analysis of Fossil Evidence for the Origin and Early Evolution of Vertebrates

The origin and early evolution of vertebrates — fishes and their descendants — represents a poorly understood phase in the deep-time ancestry of the human lineage. A series of transitions occurred between 500 and 400 million years ago from a worm-like ancestor to a bony predatory

Composting anaerobic digestate

The interest in organic waste treatment has increased a lot in the recent years. Among the treatment technologies, anaerobic digestion (AD) has gained a significant role in municipal solid waste management due to its energy recovery benefits. Digestate is the solid material produced from the biodegradation of organic waste during anaerobic digestion process. Management of a high volume of digestate is one of the challenges in AD technology. The digestate can be mixed with the organic waste and then applied to the composting process.

Efficient Signal Processing and Radio Resource Management for High-Throughput and Low-Latency Massive MIMO Cellular Systems

Future cellular systems must accommodate increasing demand for very high throughput and low latency data services. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) approach involving base stations equipped with much larger numbers of antennas than the numbers of users served promises to significantly increase network capacity, while nonorthogonal multi-carrier transmission is expected to dramatically reduce the latency.

Towards Production of Industrial Oils from Camelina

In addition to food uses, vegetable oils are increasingly a source for renewable biomaterials and biofuels. Recent progress in the development of a biobased economy is focused on introduction and improvement of novel crop plants for non-food applications. The proposed project is part of an international collaborative effort to develop camelina as a new industrial oil platform.

Swine feed efficiency improvement and meat quality co-selection using genome wide technologies

Improving feed efficiency (FE) and meat quality (MQ) are Canadian swine industry priorities that will increase sustainability and competitiveness. It is difficult to improve these traits simultaneously by traditional breeding methods due to limited knowledge of genetic interactions, limitations on animals that can be measured and the high cost of measurement. High throughput genomic technology has the potential to positively impact these issues. Our overall purpose is to develop a genomic assisted breeding program to simultaneously improve FE and MQ.

Radiochemistry for the Pharmacokinetic Evaluation of Novel Bone-Targeting Peptide Hormone Derivatives Year Two

This proposed research project is about development of new bone-targeting drug called PTHPEG- BP, this new compound will overcome shortages of current clinical peptide hormone PTH, and show better treatment efficacy and lower price then the latter; several new technologies will be used on research of this PTH, such as micro Positron Emission Tomography (PET/CT), and several of its characteristics will be identified such as structure, bioactivity, and metabolism inside body.

Permeability-based leakage model to describe functional failure in composite storage vessels for alternative fuels

Pressure vessels made entirely from fiber-reinforced polymer can generate substantial cost and performance improvements leading to their greater acceptance as a storage medium for pressurized alternative fuels (e.g. hydrogen). Inherent anisotropy and inhomogeneity of fiberreinforced composites usually induces functional failure (i.e. leakage) that precedes structural failure by bursting. Functional failure is attributed mainly to transverse matrix micro-cracking.
