A new generation of wear-resistant coatings consisting of high-entropy alloy matrix and complex carbides for the energy industry

Wear of materials is crucial to the energy industry, causing malfunction or failure of operation facilities, leading to high operation costs, short service life of facilities, and safety concerns. This project is proposed to develop a new class of highperformance
wear-resistant materials for protective coatings using high-entropy alloys as the matrix reinforced by complex carbides. The project is focused on crucial issues to achieve optimal combinations of high strength and high toughness, towards considerably increased wear resistance. The proposed research will be undertaken by four interns (postgraduate students) in collaboration with PDFs. The main outcomes will include prototype materials for commercial applications, guidelines for coating design, databases and standard for further development. The project is highly relevant to partners’ business and will directly benefit the partner organizations. Since wear is a common issue for machinery and facilities having dynamic contacts, the outcomes of the project would also generate foreseeable benefits to various Canadian industrial sectors, and consequently benefit Canadians in various aspects as mentioned earlier.
