Development of a robust polymerase chain reaction method to genotype three key genes attributed to Alzheimer’s Disease risk using saliva

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) accounts for 60-80% of cases of dementia in people over 65 years of age and affects over 50 million people worldwide and is expected to affect at least 150 million by 2050. Three risk genes, that were identified with strong association with late onset AD, are the topic of this research study – APOE, ABCA7 and PICALM6. Knowledge of the status of individuals at specific loci of these genes is useful in devising precision nutrition and other interventions that might contribute to preventing the development of AD. The intention is to streamline earlier diagnosis of AD which effectively leads to improved patient outcomes following pharmaceutical interventions. In developing this innovative technology to detect AD risk genes rapidly and accurately, revolutionizing the diagnostic process for the at-risk population.
